Allan Scally Road Relay

The 55th Allan Scally Road Relay attracted a record-breaking 338 teams from across Scotland and beyond, making it the largest event of its kind in the UK. This remarkable statistic is a real boost for athletics in Scotland and will hopefully encourage even more entries for the National Road Race Championships later in March.Shettleston Harriers were delighted to welcome John Mason to start the event. John was also presented with a special award ahead of his retirement from frontline politics in May. A longstanding supporter of the club and of athletics more widely, John also has personal history with the race, having competed in the Scally Relay during his student days at University of Glasgow in the 1970s. Fittingly, this year’s event also hosted the Scottish Student Championships.

The familiar setting of Glasgow Green once again proved an ideal venue. Due to demolition work at one of the boat houses, there was a slight alteration to the measured 5km course, but this did nothing to diminish the quality of competition.

Men’s Race

The host club were thrilled as Jamie Burns brought Shettleston Harriers home in first place in a new course record of 59:38. In doing so, the team became the first ever to break 60 minutes for the event.

It was a fiercely contested race, with Glasgow University and last year’s record breakers Cambuslang Harriers pushing hard throughout. The final leg featured four Scottish Internationalists, before Jamie produced one of the fastest ever legs recorded on the course to secure victory.

Women’s Race

There was a historic first-time victory for Edinburgh AC, who held off strong challenges from Glasgow University and Stirling University. Kirsty Walker had the honour of bringing the Edinburgh team home, adding a family connection to the occasion as her father had also competed in the event during his time at Glasgow University.

The family theme ran throughout the day, with siblings and parents competing together in teams including East Kilbride and VP Glasgow, contributing to the welcoming and inclusive atmosphere. Alongside the elite competition, it was also encouraging to see community and corporate teams taking part.

A Family Affair and Acknowledgements

This year’s race was particularly special for the Scally family, with Allan’s granddaughters, great granddaughter and two great, great grandchildren in attendance. The Scally family have contributed an extraordinary 98 years of service to Shettleston Harriers and the wider Scottish athletics community.

It was also fitting to see Ron Morrison officiating as race referee. Ron competed in the very first race in 1969, and like the Scally family, his family’s combined contribution to Shettleston, Fife AC, Scottish Athletics and UK Athletics totals 94 years. An incredible legacy within our sport.

Events of this scale are only possible with the support of many organisations and volunteers. The club extends sincere thanks to Protay, Arnold Clark, Tunnocks, Asda, Glasgow Life, St Andrews First Aid, Raynet, Scottish Athletics officials and, of course, the many marshals who ensured the day ran so smoothly.

Track and Field Update

Scottish Indoor Relay Championships

Shettleston Harriers were not to be denied in a thrilling race for gold at the Scottish Indoor Relay Championships at the Emirates Arena on Saturday.

Twice their rivals from Pitreavie took the lead in the under 18 men’s 4x200m and twice Shettleston battled back to reclaim it. The team was led off by David Omorogieva, stepping up from the under 16 ranks where he has already secured relay gold this indoor season. David handed over a slight lead to Michael Nyarko, who ran another strong leg but could not quite prevent Pitreavie edging ahead.

A slick baton change to Victor Akintula saw Shettleston regain the advantage, with Law and District close behind in third. Once more Pitreavie clawed their way back in front, but an excellent changeover from Victor to Raphael Johnson put Shettleston back into the lead and firmly in contention for gold.

An exciting showdown off the final bend and into the home straight saw Pitreavie draw level, but Shettleston were not to be denied. Raphael maintained his composure to secure victory in 1:33.84, ahead of Pitreavie 1:33.92 and Law 1:34.64.

It was a tremendous win for a relatively inexperienced quartet. Thanks also go to training partner Abdul Tijani, who demonstrated excellent team spirit by attending as reserve.

Chris Bennett continued his strong early season form by finishing second in the men’s hammer with a throw of 68.36m, edging ever closer to the Commonwealth Games qualifying standard of 69.76m.

Phillip Neilson recorded 30:02 for 10km at Trafford in another solid performance on the roads.
