With the track and field season nearly finished, a number of athletes,with support from the club, travelled to Aberdeen to compete in the Senior Scottish and U18 Championships.
The Lanahan brothers, Joseph (U16) and Abraham (U18), both produced performances of the highest standard.
Joseph took the U18 long jump title with a massive jump of 7.12m to win gold and break the U16 Scottish record, with Abraham finishing 5th in the long jump with a jump of 6.44m. The previous day, Abraham had won the triple jump with a PB of 14.58m. All of these jumps were achieved with legal winds, and both boys are placed high in the UK rankings as well.
Talented Abraham also scored a PB in the high jump when he finished 4th with a clearance of 1.88m.
Emily Fawkes showed why she has been called to the international scene this summer with an excellent bronze medal in the Senior Women’s 400m, recording a time of 57.30. She followed this up with 7th place in the 200m final.
Eleven athletes made the trip to Aberdeen and, although not gaining medals, made finals and secured PB performances. This can only help in their development, and each of their coaches’ guidance and commitment cannot be forgotten.
The name Euan Kennedy will not be familiar to many members, but if we look back at the records of our RJY group a number of years ago, we will see his name. Roll on to 2026, and he is the Irish U18 800m/1500m champion and was running for the Irish Athletics Development Squad on Sunday at Aberdeen.
He finished 2nd to the talented Angus Wilkinson of East Kilbride in the U18 1500m. His family were delighted to catch up with Elaine Mackay and buy a club vest. Look out, he may be in a Shettleston vest again in the near future!
