Shettleston Harriers Weekly Round-Up: An Action-Packed Weekend!
Another action-packed weekend for Shettleston Harriers, with our athletes competing across a wide variety of events, bringing home medals, personal bests, and international honours!
Scottish National Relay Championships: Podium Finish in Dundee!
Our senior male sprinters made the trip to Dundee for the Scottish National Relay Championships, achieving some great results! Two Shettleston teams made it to the final, with our A team securing a 3rd place podium finish! This marks the first time since 2011 that the club has made the podium in the 4x100m.

The bronze medal-winning team consisted of Emmanuel Nyamekye, Gkontouin Imante, Tanatorn Longjamnong, and Maynard Conteh, who clocked a time of 42.98. Our second team also performed strongly, with Derick Aigbadon, Arif Chapiti, Clive Ke, and Alexander Smith finishing in 47.89.

This outstanding performance is a huge testament to our Sprint Coach, Gordon Bury, who has cultivated a fantastic group of young sprinters and even drove the team to Dundee to ensure they could compete. This good news follows recent announcements that we have added two new Scottish internationalists to the club: Dan Dry and Harry Pulham, both selected to represent Scotland in the Snowdon International Hill Race in July! This brings our total to nine athletes gaining international honours for the club this year – a remarkable achievement!
Brian Goodwin Memorial 10km: Strong Performances in the Southside
Despite humid temperatures in the mid-20s, seven Shettleston Harriers made the short trip to compete in the Brian Goodwin Memorial 10km, mainly around Pollok Park on Friday night.

It was fantastic to see Irish internationalist Fionnuala Ross back in action after a spell out injured, finishing as 1st lady (15th overall) in a brisk 34:36. She was joined by Joanne Harkins, who completed the course in 58:43, finishing 18th in her age group.
Jonathan Moore led the men’s team with a strong run of 31:51, helping to guide the team to an impressive 3rd place overall! Other notable performances included:
- Cameron Muir: 00:33:06
- Max McKee: 00:35:17
- Calum Oates: 00:36:07
- Stewart Houston: 00:36:16
Red Star Games at Crownpoint:
Closer to home, another Scottish internationalist, Lidya Woldeselassie (T/F35), was competing at the Red Star Games at Crownpoint. Only in Scotland could we experience 4 seasons in a day! Lidya just missed a personal best in the Discus with 19.41m, and completed her day with a 100m sprint in 19.10 and a Long Jump of 2.55m.
Other Track Highlights:
Congratulations to David Houston, who picked up a title at the Northern Ireland Masters Championships in Belfast! David won the 1500m title and secured a 3rd place finish in the 800m, both on the track – A brilliant result!

Loch Lomond 10k & 5K:
We also had some strong runs in the Loch Lomond 10k & 5k for juniors:
- Denis Williams: 00:43:07 (2nd V60)
- Joe Haughey: 00:47:45
- Sean Watson: 00:49:06
- Sonny Muir clocked an impressive 21:14 for 5km
Parkrun Round-Up – Saturday, June 21st, 2025
Saturday saw humid conditions in Glasgow, at least, on the back of the Brian Goodwin 10k, which took place the previous day. However, Shettleston Harriers runners still managed to be spotted as far north as Aviemore down to the Fens in the south. Here’s a summary:
At Cuningar Loop, Harry Bell achieved 30th place (22:53), soon followed by Oliver Allen who was 56th with a time of 24:24, both on their first visit to this Parkrun. Ross Noble chose Pollok Park to run his first ever Parkrun, taking 53rd position with a time of 24:33. Also in Glasgow, Lee Mitchell finished 8th (21:35), David Murphy 15th (22:54) and Bob Porteous 29th (27:25) at Tollcross Parkrun. Moving away from Glasgow, Joanne Harkins ran at Greenock Parkrun for the first time, achieving a time of 28:33 and 62nd position. Out in Ayrshire, James Burns was 10th with a time of 23:42 at Largs Prom Parkrun. In the Cairngorms, Iain Burns achieved 4th spot at Aviemore Parkrun on his first visit there, with a time of 19:02. Finally, all the way down in Peterborough, Toby Hession finished with a time of 19:08 and 17th position out of a whopping 614 runners at Ferry Meadows Parkrun.
Superteams National Final:
After qualifying at the regional heat in Cumbernauld a few weeks ago, a team of four Shettleston U12 athletes – Alba White, Olivia McGowan, Fynn Ferrie, and Louis Millican – travelled to Dundee for the National final of SuperTeams!
SuperTeams is a dynamic team event for Under 12s, where every athlete competes in a 75m sprint, turbo javelin, and long jump. Our team did extremely well and truly did the Shettleston vest proud! They achieved some fantastic personal bests and great results, all backed by the superb attitude shown by the squad throughout the day. They finished an excellent 26th overall in the National Final, which is a brilliant result against the country’s best, and many of these promising athletes will get another opportunity to compete at this level next year. Great work, everyone!

Ultra Running Feats: Scott Hendrie Conquers the West Highland Way!
A huge shout-out to Scott Hendrie who took on the epic West Highland Way Race at the weekend, finishing an incredible 21st out of 225 participants! To top it off, one of the race organisers noted that at just 22 years old, Scott was the second youngest person ever to finish this gruelling race, and the youngest for 18 years! An absolutely phenomenal achievement!
To round off this incredible effort, Scott also managed to raise over £2,300 for Kindness Homeless Street Team – truly inspiring!
Other Successes:.
- A huge congratulations to club member Michael Paxton, who is making quite an impact in the duathlon world with a number of wins in recent weeks – fantastic work, Michael!
