Cross Country Success at Alexandra Park

Shettleston Harriers delivered another major event for Scottish athletics this weekend, hosting the Inter-District Cross Country Championships on the iconic Alexandra Park Golf Course. The venue is steeped in history, with the Alexandra Athletic Club having a cross-country section dating back to the 1870s, and the golf course itself having been used as a training ground for many of Scotland’s finest endurance athletes over the years.

The weekend saw Scotland in the grip of Arctic weather, and many running events were cancelled; it was a real credit to the club that the course was prepared to the highest standard. A dedicated team worked over two days to ensure race could go ahead safely. The club would like to thank our friends from Cambuslang Harriers and John Bell of Garscube Harriers for their support in delivering an excellent day of cross-country running, and Gary Woods for coordinating the event and leading all of our dedicated volunteers.

Teams from the North, East, West and Scottish Students districts ensured that some of the very best endurance talent in the country was on show. It was particularly pleasing to see a strong Shettleston presence representing the West of Scotland across a range of age groups. For many athletes, this event represents the first step towards greater honours and the opportunity to earn a representative vest.

Unfortunately, a small number of Shettleston athletes were unable to make the start line due to illness, and Emily Carroll was also affected by a cancelled flight.

The next cross-country outing for Shettleston athletes will be the West League and LAAA Championships at Strathaven (near East Kilbride) next Saturday. Any athlete wishing to compete should contact club secretary John Mackay at secretary@shettlestonharriers.org.uk as soon as possible.

Scottish Open Indoor Championships – Emirates Arena

As the thaw set in on Sunday, attention turned indoors to the Emirates Arena for the Scottish Open Indoor Championships. A large group of Shettleston athletes competed across a wide range of events, producing numerous personal bests and highlighting the excellent work being done by both athletes and coaches.

The standout performance of the day came from U16 athlete Joseph Lannah, who jumped an outstanding 6.99 metres in the long jump. This puts him neck and neck with his coach Tom Harrison’s best jump of 6.99m, achieved back in 1986 when Tom was a senior Scottish internationalist in the event. Subject to confirmation, Joseph’s jump may also be a new Scottish record.
