International Selection Success– Weynay Gheb
Congratulations to Weynay Ghebresilase, who has been selected for the GB and NI Marathon team for the European Championships, which will take place in Birmingham in August. With no marathon in the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, this is a great opportunity for Weynay to shine on the international stage on 16th August. His Scottish record of 2:06:59 puts him in the top tier of European marathon runners, and the city centre course will showcase the talent in the UK.
He returns to his training camp in Kenya in mid-May, and if any members know of any sponsors who would like to support his preparations, please let us know.
Following on from Weynay’s and Brogan Wallace’s Scottish medals at London, the club also received the great news that our men’s team took the Scottish team title. Congratulations to Luke Howard, Max McKee and Angus Lindsay, all claiming their first national medals.
Scottish 5km Championships – Silverknowes
The action on the roads continued on Friday evening at the Scottish 5km Championships at Silverknowes in Edinburgh. The pre event rain cleared, leaving near perfect conditions for all athletes. Shettleston continued the success of the previous week, picking up two bronze team medals and one individual title for Avril Mason (W50).
There was a large turnout from club members, many of whom are now looking forward to the final round of the Lindsays Road Grand Prix at the Babcock Shettleston 10km next Sunday. Over 700 athletes have entered for the event, which kicks off at 10am with the 10km race, followed by the 3km fun run at 11.15am.
The course record of 29:06 will be under threat in the men’s race, with some of the best 10km runners in Scotland set to start. Five previous champions are expected to compete, including Shettleston’s own Jamie Burns, who took the title last year. Natasha Phillips of Dundee returns as the current course record holder, and we are looking forward to a morning of exciting racing.
It is unlikely that Brogan Wallace will defend her title this year as she continues to recover from her excellent run at London last weekend.
The race is not only about the elite field, with participants ranging in age from 16 to 76 all set to take part. The club works with Helensburgh AC and Dumbarton to deliver the series, with fantastic support from Babcock, Start Fitness, Protays, Arnold Clark and Tunnock’s.
The fun run is free for all. Just turn up, no number, no times, just fun. All finishers will receive a medal.
If you are around next Sunday morning, Glasgow Green is the place to be. We can never have too much help.

Youth Development League (YDL): Grangemouth
Our young athletes in the U14 and U16 age groups got off to their best start for many years in Division 2 of the Youth Development League at Grangemouth on Sunday. There were fantastic performances across many events, and it was great to see some athletes competing for the first time. Draft results are available and, if confirmed, Shettleston Harriers finished 2nd overall.
Many thanks to the team managers, officials, coaches and parents who made the journey to Grangemouth to support our athletes.
In another busy week, we had athletes also competing on the hills and the roads at various venues:
Whangie Hill Race
17th Stewart Houston
Pad Race Barrhead
7th Andy Jackson
Edinburgh to Berwick Road Race (20 miles)
1st M60 John Duffy
Looking Forward- A Busy Week Ahead!
This coming weekend sees our track and field athletes competing at the Scottish Open and Mixed Relay Championships at Linwood. All the action then switches to Glasgow Green on Sunday, where we host the Lindsay Scottish 10km Championship, a World Athletics Permit Race, within our own Babcock Shettleston 10km.
We have 31 club athletes on the start list, with the current Scottish 10km champion defending his title.
At 11.15 am, we have the fun run, which is free to enter for children. Just turn up and run with your child. Everyone will receive a medal, a biscuit and a bottle of water.
A Final Call For Volunteers: Babcock 10k
Over 50 club members will be helping this Sunday for the Babcock 10 K. Of course, we always have room for more helpers. Have you signed up to help? Let club secretary John Mackay know if you can assist in any way, whether that is marshalling, handing out water or medals, or helping to set up the course.
Spotted Shettleston Harriers in Hoolit Magazine
The Club was delighted to see ourselves in this month’s publication of Hoolit. One of our young members, Emma Leiper, took the initiative to share an article about the club with the monthly publication, which acts as a community hub for the East End of Glasgow.
The Club would like to extend a huge thank you to Emma for taking the time to publicise our Club and taking action to increase our visibility
