Commonwealth Games Selection for Coach Ellie Stone

Many of us will already know that our Club Coach Ellie Stone has been selected to represent Scotland at the upcoming Glasgow Commonwealth Games as part of the Sprint Cycling team.

Everyone at the club sends their congratulations to Ellie and will be supporting her at the Games. Alongside her own training regime, Ellie spends many hours at Crownpoint supporting the clubs Under-12 athletes: We are sure many of our parents and young people are very grateful to have such a great role model and coach guiding their journeys through Athletics.

The club has a bit of history of supplying members for the cycling team, with former member Neah Evans also selected for Glasgow and, in recent years, winning World, Olympic, European and Commonwealth medals.

Spotted: Coach Lidya. National Volunteering Week

Last week was National Volunteering Week and we were very happy to see our very own young coach Lidya Woldeselassie being featured in a video made by Glasgow Life to highlight the importance and enjoyment of volunteering. Lidya is an active young athlete and has helped out around the club for several years now, more recently taking on an active coaching role in our Run-Jump-Throw programme.

A club the size of Shettleston takes hours and hours of work to run so, we are always looking for volunteers to help spread the load. It could be as little as 20 minutes a week helping our coaches take registers, becoming a qualified coach or helping out at events as a marshal. If you are interested in helping out at the club then please get in touch with Club & Community Development Officer, Matthew Byers, development@shettlestonharriers.org.uk

Giving Back to Track Grants

Thank you to Eilish McColgan, who supports athletes through her foundation, Giving Back to Track, which awards grants to athletes to help them develop their potential.

Emily Fawkes (400m) and Annie McLean (400m) have both been awarded travel grants. Congratulations to both athletes, and thank you to Eilish for her support.

Scottish Schools Combined Events Championships

With school events dominating recent weeks, many of our young athletes have been competing at their school championships, showing the benefits of being part of a club and receiving regular coaching. It has been great to see so many photographs of our athletes proudly displaying their medals.

Attention has now moved to the national schools events, and on Saturday a number of our athletes competed at the Scottish Schools Combined Events Championships in Grangemouth.
