Domestic Season Gets Back Underway
Shettleston Harriers hit the ground running as the domestic athletics season got back underway this week, with athletes competing across road races, the Combined Events, Para Athletics and Masters Championships.
Of course, the excitement of the Commonwealth Games was still very much the topic of discussion around our Crownpoint base this week, but there was plenty of action for our athletes to get involved in as competition resumed across the country.
Road Racing
Catching up on two 10km races from last week, Philip Neilson took an impressive victory at the Dunoon Coastal 10km, finishing more than a minute clear of the runner-up.
GP Lachlan Calder also competed at the Dundonald 10km, taking a well-earned 23rd place.
Friday evening saw a number of Shettleston athletes travel east to compete in the QA 5km, with some excellent performances:

Combined Events, Para and Masters Championships
Grangemouth was the venue for the Combined Events, Para Athletics and Masters Championships, with Shettleston athletes enjoying a highly successful weekend.
Lidya Woldeselassie (T35) took second place in the 100m, recording 18.88 (+3.0), before going one better to take gold in the Discus with a throw of 18.41m.
Lidya also added another gold medal to her weekend with victory in the Para Long Jump, recording 2.60m.
Estelle Giraud (U20) competed across all five events in the U20 Combined Events, finishing third with a points total of 3038.
Her individual results were:
- 100m Hurdles – 19.47 (+1.7)
- High Jump – 1.40m
- Long Jump – 4.39m
- Javelin – 14.93m
- 800m – 2:45.28
Masters Success
Age is certainly no limit, and John Scott (M85) claimed yet another National title by taking gold in the M85 Shot Put.
Looking back through the records, John was already picking up National medals in 1969 and 1970 – an incredible 56 years ago!
Our Masters athletes enjoyed a particularly successful weekend, with Carson Graham adding two more titles to his impressive CV.
Carson took gold in the M50 High Jump, clearing 1.56m, before adding another title in the Long Jump with a leap of 6.03m (+2.7). The performance was also a PB and Scottish Best for the age group.
Our 5000m athletes also came away with medals, with Ian Burns (M45) taking silver in 16:55.35 and John Oates (M65) also claiming silver in 20:35.53.
That makes a hugely successful weekend for our Masters athletes, with Carson and Lidya both finishing the championships with multiple gold medals.
