As the summer weather begins to settle in we have seen another week for Shettleston Harriers, with outstanding performances across the board. Yet again highlighting the effort put in by all of our athletes, coaches, officials, volunteers and parents.
Success at the Babcock 10km Series in Dumbarton
The week began with the second race in the Babcock 10km Series at Dumbarton, where over 700 athletes took part despite damp conditions and a revised course caused by major roadworks.
Working alongside our friends at Dumbarton AAC, the event was another successful evening for the club and it produced some excellent performances from Shettleston athletes.
Taha Ghafari continued his superb record in the event by claiming victory for the third time in the last four years, leading the men’s team to victory alongside Tom Porter and Angus Lindsay.
Clare Stewart maintained her excellent recent form by finishing 2nd in the women’s race.

Outstanding Night at the GAA Miler Meet
If Thursday night in Dumbarton was successful, then Friday’s GAA Miler Meeting at Crownpoint produced an extraordinary set of performances for the club.
The headline performance came from 14-year-old Zoe Roberts, who produced one of the finest junior performances in recent club history. Zoe smashed her personal best to run 2:09.67 over 800m, setting a new club record and recording the second-fastest ever time by a Scottish U15 athlete.

Even more impressively, Zoe won the women’s A race ahead of Edinburgh AC senior athlete Beth Ansell, fresh from representing Scotland at the Loughborough International where she had won the mile the previous weekend.
The club’s endurance athletes produced numerous PB performances throughout the evening, with Jamie Burns once again delivering a standout run over 3000m to move into 11th place on the club’s all-time rankings.

At the Edinburgh Festival of Running, Ciaran Curley ran 20:21 in the YA 5km.
In Germany, Chris Bennett continued his push for Commonwealth Games selection with another excellent hammer performance, throwing 71.20m at the Frankisch-Crumbach Games to maintain his position as Scotland’s number one ranked hammer thrower.
Meanwhile Carson Graham continued preparations for the World Masters Championships in South Korea later this year by posting a personal best of 9.14m in the M50 6kg Shot in Dundee.
Strong YDL Showing and Marathon Performances
Sunday saw athletes competing in both Kilmarnock and Edinburgh in warm conditions.
Our Young Athletes enjoyed an excellent day in the YDL Division 2 match, finishing 2nd overall with numerous PB performances and several athletes competing for the first time.
The warm conditions in Edinburgh made for difficult racing conditions in both the marathon and half marathon events, but Shettleston athletes still produced several strong performances.
