Well done to all our young athletes who travelled to Biggar for the South Lanarkshire Schools Cross Country Championships. At least 14 athletes from five different schools were represented by club members, with several picking up both individual and team medals for their schools — a fantastic achievement and a great way to round off the cross country season.

With the final cross country race of the year now complete, attention quickly turns to the track season. The first league match takes place next Sunday in Ayr, quickly followed by the Linwood Open Graded Meeting (14/9) and the National League (19/4). Our own Open Graded Meetings on 25/8 and 1/9 have already attracted over 200 entries, including 40 club athletes. Remember that club athletes receive one free entry when they enter an event (two-for-one offer), and we encourage everyone to get entries in as soon as possible as these popular meetings are sure to fill up long before August.

On the road, Daniel Bradford and Phillip Nelson travelled to Germany to compete in the Paderborn 10km, recording impressive times of 30:02 and 30:20 respectively.

Closer to home, preparations continue for our own Babcock Shettleston 10km, which takes place on 10th May at Glasgow Green. Close to 600 athletes have already entered this year’s event, which also hosts the Lindsay National 10km Championships. If you are able to help in any way, please contact Gary Woods (Club President) or John Mackay (Club Secretary). The race promises to be a high-quality event, with athletes travelling from across the UK in search of fast times on this flat course.

At 11am on the day, a 3km Fun Run will also take place. This is free for our young club members, with parents welcome to run alongside them. There is no need to pre-enter — just turn up on the day. All runners will receive a medal, water and a biscuit.

Lachlan Oates was the pick of the parkruns this weekend, clocking 15:03 to set a new course record at Elgin. He now turns his attention to next weekend’s CSSAL competition.

Finally, any athletes in the U18 age group and above who have not yet informed Club Secretary John Mackay of their availability for the National League on 19/4 are asked to do so as soon as possible.
