Storm Boelo had a major effect on this weekend’s activities for the club. The National Cross Country Relays, scheduled for Saturday, were quite rightly cancelled, as the weather forecast indicated genuine health and safety concerns for everyone involved in the championships. Consideration is being given to whether the event can be rescheduled later in the year.
Much earlier in the morning, the Newton 10K took place in fairly calm conditions before the storm reached Glasgow. Two club athletes took part in the 10K, with one competing in the supporting Young Athlete 3K.

Abraham Lanahan selected for Scottish Athletics National Academy
The club would like to send our congratulations to Abraham Lanahan, who has been selected for the Scottish Athletics National Academy.
The two-year development programme is designed to support talented track and field athletes by building the knowledge, skills and competencies they need to progress towards senior-level competition. Club members will be well aware of Abraham’s exploits over the last few years, and we look forward to following his progress.

Iain Burns selected for Masters International Cross Country
Congratulations also to Masters athlete Iain Burns, who has been selected to represent the Scottish Veteran Harriers Club at the Masters International Cross Country next month.
A strong team of 80 athletes will represent Scotland at the event in Dublin, with races taking place on Saturday 14 November. We wish Iain and the Scottish team all the best.
Club appoints new Club Administration Officer
The club is delighted to announce that Jackie Alexander will take up a new role as Club Administration Officer on Monday 26 October.
This is a 10-hour-per-week post, funded by sportscotland for three years, which will help the club continue to move forward. Shettleston was delighted to be one of the few clubs successful in applying for this funding.
In addition to the 10 hours for Jackie, the club was also successful in securing funding for our Development Officer, Matt Byers, gaining an extra five hours per week to expand our work with schools in the local area.
This now means the club has 37 hours of funded staff time, alongside the thousands of hours contributed by our volunteers.
Club AGM: Wednesday 2 December
The club AGM will take place on Wednesday 2 December, with Matt sending out the relevant information very soon.
All members aged 16 and over will have the opportunity to attend. The current club trustees are keen to attract new trustees to assist in the running of the club. Details of the role and what is required will be included in the AGM information.

Another busy weekend saw Shettleston Harriers competing in Ireland, the Netherlands, England and across Scotland.
Des Gilmore Memorial 5 Mile Road Race
The club was delighted to support the Des Gilmore Memorial 5 Mile Road Race, organised by Glasgow University on Saturday.
Des was a great supporter of the club over many years, helping to officiate at the Allan Scally, Babcock 10K and our Open Graded Meetings. Thank you to our four officials, Gary Woods, Raymond Loughran, Elaine Mackay and John Mackay, who helped the University to host the race.
The University 5 Mile Race was historically one of the top races of the winter season. Looking back at the winners, it is a roll call of some of our top endurance athletes from the past. Previous Shettleston winners include Norman Morrison, Nat Muir, Mike Deason, Thomas Fay, Paul Sorrie, Jamie Burns, Taha Ghafari and Clare Stewart.
Although we had no winners this year, it was great to see new member Dan De Luca finish 13th and John Duffy finish 37th, with both supporting this historic race.
Shettleston Harriers in Amsterdam
Further afield, three athletes travelled to Amsterdam to compete in the Festival of Running, which features three distances around the streets of the Dutch capital: the marathon, half marathon and 8K.
Three Shettleston Harriers competed in the half marathon with great success. New member Euan Rose finished an excellent 11th out of 12,778 runners in a time of 70:08.
Ladies Cross Country Captain Avril Mason (F50) finished first in her age group in 83:10, as well as placing 16th female overall. Hannah Gilchrist also competed over the half marathon distance, finishing 25th female in a time of 84:31.
Meanwhile, in the marathon, Emma Choudhry finished in a time of 3:59:20.
Unlike the sunny conditions in Glasgow, the athletes had to contend with rain throughout the races. Well done to everyone who made the trip and represented the club!
Autumn Open International Cross Country, Dublin
At the Autumn Open International Cross Country event at Abbotstown, Dublin, Fionnuala Ross continued her recent good form to finish seventh.
Looking at the results, only a few seconds separated the athletes finishing fourth to seventh, highlighting the strength of the competition.
In the younger age groups, Euan Kennedy finished 11th in his first year in the U20 age group.
Well done to both athletes on their performances!
