Busy Weekend Across the UK for Shettleston Athletes

Following a very busy week, Shettleston athletes could be found competing around the UK over the weekend. Our Facebook page highlights the great achievements of our young athletes at the recent Scottish Schools Indoor Championships, and this continued across different age groups this weekend.

Jamie Burns and Clare Stewart travelled to London to represent Scotland in the Home Countries Cross Country International at the famous Parliament Hill course. If you watched it online, you will have seen why it is considered one of the most demanding courses in the UK, with lots of climbing and mud. Jamie finished 13th in a high-class field, with Clare making her first senior appearance and finishing 25th.

It was great to see Chris Bennet back in action in the Hammer, recording a throw of 65.37, which puts him at the top of the Scottish rankings. Chris, who competed at the last 2 Commonwealth Games and at the Rio 2016 Olympics, looks like he could be in good standing to be selected for the Glasgow Commonwealth Team later this year. The performance came at the England Athletics North and Midlands Winter Long Throws Championships in Leigh on 7 to 8 February.

Mike Deason is one of the best ultra-runners in Scotland and recently became a master’s athlete (M40). The Ardgartan Trail Race is a 21-mile race which takes place in Ardgartan Forest Park, Argyll. The route is a mix of tarmac, forest tracks and narrow trails with waterfalls, hills and descents, with 3,333 feet of ascent. Just a nice Saturday afternoon run. Mike had a fantastic run to win the event by over 18 minutes, running 2hrs 34mins 17secs.

Maynard Conteh has been running PB performances all winter, and this continued at the Scottish Students Indoor Championships, where he picked up the bronze medal over 200m in a PB performance of 22.57.

English Indoor Championships Success

Two of our young athletes travelled to Sheffield over the weekend to compete in the English Indoor Championships. Fresh from her win at the Scottish Schools U16 800m and her award for best performance, Zoe Roberts won her heat in a PB of 2.13.31 before finishing 3rd in yet another PB of 2.13.28. This crowned a fantastic week for this young athlete, moving her to 5th on the Scottish U16 all-time list and setting a new club record.

Congratulations to Emily Fawkes on her first run for the club when she posted a PB of 57.48 over 400m. This is one of the fastest times ever run by a Shettleston athlete. She continued her PB performances over 200m, recording a swift 25.83.

Masters, Para and Relay Championships at the Emirates

Moving to Sunday, we had athletes competing in the Masters, Para and Scottish Indoor Relay Championships. It was a fantastic afternoon at the Emirates, which saw the club on the podium many times during the day. For the first time in many years, we had a number of relay teams competing, and we scored great success. A big thanks to Jackie Alexander, who combined our sprinters and endurance athletes to make strong teams across the age groups. Three teams made the finals, which is no mean feat. The U16 boys took gold, the U14 boys took bronze, and the U16 girls were 6th in the final. We also showed our strength in depth with a U16 girls B team also competing. New club records were set across the age groups.

Congratulations to Lidya Woldeselassie, who picked up two medals in the Para (T35) events:
SP 6.81 PB – Gold
60m 11.77 – Silver

The club caters for all ages, and our masters athletes also delivered several medals:
Carson Graham M45
60m H – Gold 10.14 secs
LJ – Gold 5.50m
HJ – Bronze 1.51m
60m – 4th 7.93 PB

Paul Easdale M35
