The Babcock 10K series continued this week with the Dumbarton 10K on Thursday evening. After the hugely successful Shettleston 10K at Glasgow Green over a week ago more than 450 runners took to the start line at Dumbarton Academy on a pleasantly warm and sunny evening.

Shettleston Harriers were well represented at the event with 16 club members taking part and it proved to be a golden evening all round for the blue and gold. Taha Ghafari led from start to finish, crossing the line and taking the win in a time of 30.22, a minute and a half ahead of nearest rival Ross Horgan from Bellahouston Road Runners (31.53). The podium places were completed by Jack Heathwood from Kilbarchan AAC (32:10).

A few minutes behind Taha, in 18th place, Brogan Wallace finished with a new personal best time of 34.24, winning the Senior women’s event ahead of Nynke Mulholland-Stümmer of Inverclyde AC (35.41/35.42) in second and Shettleston team-mate Hannah Terrance (36.39/36.41) in third. Brogan’s time was only 24 seconds outside Fionnuala Ross’s course record.

Calum Harrington-Vogt was just over 20 seconds from the podium positions, finishing in sixth place (32.35/32:37) but along with Tom Porter, who finished ninth (32.59/33:01), they secured the Men’s teams prize for Shettleston Harriers alongside Taha. Brogan, Hannah and Emma Choudhry finished fourth in the women’s team standings.

Our winners were delighted to receive their prizes from Tim Redfern, Asset Management and Operations Director of the overall series sponsor Babcock International Group. The Series now moves to Helensburgh for the third and final race with Taha and Brogan leading the overall standings. The race will start from Hermitage Academy in Helensburgh this coming Thursday, May 29th at 19:30.

For the Track and Field athletes training continued this week at Crownpoint. The club were delighted to welcome the 105th Glasgow Scout Troop from Dennistoun to the track for a Come and Try Athletics session on Tuesday night. Accompanied by President and Endurance Coach Elaine Mackay and our Development Officer Matthew Byers the Scouts took part in a multi event session. On track they raced in 100m sprints before taking to the Long Jump runway to get some jumping experience. It was then on to the infield to try Shot Putt.
It was pleasure to welcome the local Scout troop along to the track, most of whom had never tried any track and field events so it was a completely new experience for them. With the help of our experienced coaches and the enthusiasm of the Scouts we had a great session. It was lovely to see them all enjoying themselves trying something new on what was a lovely sunny evening and hopefully we maybe lit a spark and we will see some of them back at Crownpoint training and competing in the blue and gold of Shettleston Harriers in the future.

It is the time of year when our young athletes are competing in their school’s local and regional athletics competitions and we are already hearing of multiple medal winners from across Glasgow and Lanarkshire. Congratulations to those who have already competed and achieved great results. With more events and finals still to take place in the coming weeks the club wishes all our athletes the best of luck in their events. We’ll bring you a full round up at the end of term.
Attention now turns to this weekend’s competition with the next match in the Youth Development League. The U13 and U15 athletes will be in action at the Ayrshire Athletics Arena in Kilmarnock on Sunday. Action starts at 11:00am. Ahead of that some will be taking part in the Livingston Open Graded Meeting at Craigshill this evening. Good luck to all our athletes competing this weekend.
