The 131st Eric Liddell Scottish Athletics Senior and U17 National Championships took place this weekend at Grangemouth Sport Stadium with Shettleston Harriers athletes taking home medals and gaining impressive PB’s in a range of events.
The meeting took on special significance for the Club after Secretary John Mackay discovered a letter from Eric Liddell amongst the Club’s archives. In 1925 the then Club Secretary, HW Harvey, had written to Eric Liddell inviting him to take part in the Club’s next open sports meeting, hoping to attract a larger crowd of spectators and ensure the financial success of the event. Eric had to decline the invitation unfortunately due to the date clashing with another event. At the weekend the letter from Eric to the Club was presented to John MacMillan Chief Executive Officer of The Eric Liddell Community and Colin Hutchieson Chief Executive of Scottish Athletics for their own archives.
In the competition Abraham Lanahan claimed the first medal of the weekend for Shettleston Harriers on Saturday, a silver in the U17M Triple Jump with a jump of 12.76m. Club member, Annie McLean, competing this weekend for Glasgow School of Sport won bronze with third in the U17W 300m final (40.65). Estelle was competing again on Sunday in the U17W Shot Put with a best throw of 7.35m and the U17W 200m (30.61). Team-mate Teddy Tchoudja was in the medals in the Senior Women’s Shot Put competition. Philip Neilson just missed out on qualifying for the Senior Men’s 1500m final by less than four tenths of a second (4:02.30).

Away from the track there was further success for Shettleston Harriers at the Paisley 10k Road Race.
