As the year comes to an end we can reflect on a hugely successful year for Shettleston Harriers and their athletes, both on and off the track, culminating in the club winning Off Track Club of the Year at the Scottish Athletics Awards last month.

It all started back in January at the Inter-District Cross Country Championships at Alexendra Park in Glasgow. It was a great honour for the club to be asked to host this event and it was fitting that Lynn McKenna won the women’s race representing Scotland West. Lynn carried her form into the Lindsay scottishathletics National Cross Country Championships in February becoming the first Shettleston lady to win gold at these championships. The women’s team were dominant in the team competition, winning gold, with three athletes in the top ten. The men’s team were also strong on the day taking bronze.

Lynn’s success was further recognised at the end of the year when she received the “Inspiring Female In Sport” for 2025 award by Club Sport Glasgow. The club also recognised her achievements awarding her the Paul Richfeld Trophy.

On the road stand out performances came from Jamie Burns and Brogan Wallace. Jamie and Brogan were both crowned National 10k Road Race champions at Kilmarnock in June. Brogan had already won bronze at the Half Marathon Championships in Inverness in March and Jamie finished off the season with victory in the AJ Bell Great Scottish Run Half Marathon.

In Track and Field our young athletes in particular had some outstanding performances. In 2025 the club had secured a place in the UK Youth Development League (YDL) and had been promoted back to Division 1 of the Central and Southern Scotland Athletics League (CSSAL) following strong results in 2024.  In Scottish Schools, District and National events a number of our athletes won medals.

With such strong performances there were several international call ups with athletes representing Scotland and Scottish Schools in Track and Field, Road, Cross Country and Hill Running.

In 2025 the club once again hosted successful events.  The previously mentioned Inter District Cross Country Championships at Alexendra Park was followed by the Allan Scally Memorial Road Relay Race at Glasgow Green in February. This is now established as the biggest road relay race in the UK with over 1200 competitors taking part. In May, the Shettleston 10k, again at Glasgow Green, was the traditional opening race in the Babcock 10k series. This year the race attracted around 700 entrants and was successfully live streamed for the first time.

The club also successfully hosted the Dumyat Junior Hill Race early in the season followed by the ever popular Goatfell Hill Race in the summer. The season was rounded off in late August and early September with our Open Graded Meetings at Crownpoint. Once again the OGM’s attracted a full and high quality entry.

The successes and medals in competition are the icing on the cake but the club continues to go from strength to strength with increased membership across all age groups. We have seen an increase in athletes competing at events and some of our young athletes have competed for the first time in 2025.

All of this is a great credit to our club coaches who cannot be forgotten. Our coaches give up their time week after week to run the training sessions and are present at events managing and guiding our athletes. They often go unrecognised but the club were delighted when John Montgomery was awarded 2025 Coach of the Year at the Glasgow Sports Awards. Many of the athletes listed below are coached by John and their successes are undoubtedly a result of his knowledge and experience as well as his continued enthusiasm and dedication.

It has been a fantastic year of athletics for the club and we are looking forward to more success in 2026.

Wishing all our members a Happy New Year.
