The star attraction this weekend was the UK Athletics Championships in Manchester which featured two Shettleston athletes in the Hammer. The event was also the last time athletes had the chance to impress selectors for a host of major championships this summer. Mark Dry and Chris Bennett both had high hopes of selection to the World/European /Commonwealth Games due to take over the next few months. With Mark finishing 4th 68.11m and Chris 5th 67.88 it looks like selection for the Commonwealth Games is still on but the other two Championships may be beyond their reach now. Selections will be announced later this week- let’s hope!
Over the water in Ireland Fionnuala Ross made a great return to form after missing the Babcock Shettleston 10km and the Roon the Toon10km (Scottish championships) due to COVID. Her time of 34.27 (New course record) in Newell 10km in Coalisland, Count Tyrone puts her firmly back in the top 5 in Scotland for the 10k this year.
