Another stacked weekend for Shettleston Harriers, filled with individual achievements, strong championship performances, and our members taking the club vest to Parkruns across the globe!
A Fond Farewell: Remembering Dr. Des Gilmour
The club would like to extend our deepest sympathy to the family and friends of Dr. Des Gilmour, who sadly passed away last Monday. While Des was not a member of Shettleston Harriers, he was a truly great supporter in his capacity as a timekeeper at many of our events, including the Allan Scally Relay, Open Graded meetings, and the Babcock Shettleston 10km.
Hailing from New Zealand, Des was a valued member of the teaching staff at the medical school at Glasgow University. His immense contribution to Glasgow University Hares and Hounds cannot be overstated, and many Shettleston members benefited from his help and support over many years. Details of his funeral will be shared when they become available. Rest in Peace, Des.
Records Tumble & Strong Track Performances!
Aoife Carr Sets New Club Record in Dublin! Last weekend, Aoife Carr, an ex-Glasgow University Hares and Hounds member and now a valued part of our club, returned home to Ireland to compete at the Crusaders AC Meeting at the famous Morton Stadium in Dublin. Aoife was rewarded with a fantastic PB and a new club record with a superb time of 4:23.81! Absolutely brilliant, Aoife!
Andrew Taylor Competes for Glasgow Jaguars: Andrew Taylor was also on his travels, competing for the Glasgow Jaguars (British League Team) at Derby over the weekend. Andrew ran 8:53.42 to help the team finish 4th overall.
Scottish Combined & Masters Championships: Multi-Event & Age Group!
Ayr was the venue for the Scottish Combined Championships and Masters Championships over the weekend, with several Shettleston Harriers in action!
Carson Graham (M45) was incredibly busy, winning the Long Jump with 5.64m (wind +2.2) and taking 2nd in the High Jump with 1.55m on Saturday. Carson continued his great performance on Sunday, taking 1st place in the 110m Hurdles!

Lidya Woldeselassie (T35/F35) was also in action, running a wind-assisted PB over 100m in 18.13 (wind +3.8) and throwing 18.80m in the Discus.
In the Combined Events, Estelle Giraud (U/17) and Joseph Lanahan (U/15) represented the club. Estelle faced two days of intense competition in the Heptathlon, a true test of athletic performance across a wide range of events. Her results included:
- 80mH: 15.06 (wind +3.1)
- HJ: 1.38m
- SP: 8.62m
- 200m: 29.61 (wind +1.6)
- LJ: 4.43m (wind +1.2)
- Javelin: 16.54m
- 800m: 2:56.22 Estelle finished with an overall position of 11th and a points total of 2949. This fantastic performance wouldn’t be possible without the hours of hard work Estelle and her coach, Tom Harrison, have put in – well done to both!

Unfortunately, Joseph Lanahan had to pull out of his event after the 80mH, where he recorded 13.43 (wind +1.6).
Paul Easdale secured 2nd place in the M35 100m with a time of 12.23 (wind +2.5).

Shettleston Harriers Parkrun Round-Up – Saturday, July 5th, 2025
As the holiday season has commenced, many Shettleston Harriers runners have packed their running shoes into their suitcases and headed beyond the city boundaries! Here is a roundup of this week’s Parkrun activity, starting with the nearest to Shettleston first:
Tollcross: Tollcross was busy on Saturday with 100 runners. David Murphy just missed out on a top ten place, coming in 11th (23:16). Bob Porteous was 38th (28:54), and Joanne Harkins 47th (30:23).
Queen’s: Jack Yang had a strong top ten finish with a time of 21:06 and 7th position.
Pollok: Raymond Loughran achieved a time of 31:26 and 233rd position at a busy Pollok Parkrun.
Strathclyde: Moving out of Glasgow and into Lanarkshire, Gillian McMillan had a time of 33:20 and 324th position at the ever-busy Strathclyde Parkrun.
Palacerigg: John Duffy had a strong 7th placed finish with a time of 20:44 at Palacerigg’s challenging course.
Linwood: Now to Renfrewshire, Miriam Wainwright came in with a time of 32:32 and 112th place at Linwood Parkrun.
Levengrove: Next to Dunbartonshire, where Kevin Brydon finished well in 5th position, clocking a time of 19:21.
Troon: Out at the Ayrshire coast, David Gillespie took top spot in Troon with a time of 18:29 (1st position)!
Ferry Meadows: Usually, this would probably be the furthest away, where Toby Hession finished in a great 5th position (18:12) down at Ferry Meadows, near Peterborough.
Jersey: Out to the Channel Islands now, where Jethro Lennox was 3rd (18:08) and Rowan Lennox was 29th and 1st female (21:45), at a busy Jersey Parkrun, where there were 388 participants.
Clermont Waterfront: We now go transatlantic to Florida! Rebecca Ryan had a time of 28:41 (46th position) and Ellie Ryan came in with a time of 33:22 (73rd position) at Clermont Waterfront Parkrun near Orlando. This, however, was still not the furthest distance travelled from Glasgow this week…
Airlie Beach: The tourism award for this week goes to Jodie Waite, who travelled all the way to Queensland, Australia, and clocked a time of 30:42 and 84th position! Incredible!
