UKA Fell and Hill Relay Championship Report

With the hill running season nearly complete, 18 Shettleston Harriers travelled to Powys, Wales, to compete in the UKA Fell and Hill Relay Championship (FRA). The race is limited to 200 teams from the UK, and the event supplied a Scottish winner, with the strong Edinburgh-based club Carnethy taking 1st overall.

Pride of place goes to the Shettleston Vet 40 team, who claimed 3rd in this British Championship.

The bronze medal-winning team was made up of Jethro Lennox, Joe Symonds, Robert Simpson, Chris Grant Pantrey, Iain Pender, and Stephen Winter.

The event is over four legs, with different skills required:

  • Leg 1: Solo short
  • Leg 2: Pairs long
  • Leg 3: Pairs navigation
  • Leg 4: Solo short

Jethro Lennox got the Masters team off to a great start, finishing 2nd on the first leg, and the others fought with Dark Peak between 2nd and 3rd place before claiming bronze.

The women’s team finished a strong 7th in the Champs, a result which is set to guarantee us a place for open women next year. This is a strong foothold for a team who are going from strength to strength. This team was made up of Catherine Peutherer, Elena Heger, Jennifer Clark, CJ Macphail, Zoe Barber, and Heather Simpson.

The Senior Men’s team finished 15th overall, with Dan Dry the pick of the team, finishing 4th on the first leg. This team comprised Dan Dry, Cameron Young, Alex Hill, Harry Pullman, David Lawson, and Aedan McGonigle. A special mention goes to Aedan, who made the trip for his first relay just shy of his 18th birthday and put in a great showing in a highly competitive field.

Fantastic results from all the teams after a successful season on the hills.

Half Marathon and Marathon Highlights

Catching up on recent road results, we celebrate some great performances:

  • Ross Good: Finished 27th in the Manchester ½ Marathon on October 12th in a very fast time of 1:07:24.
  • Peter Avent (M40): It was fantastic to see Peter return to racing after a long time out injured, recording 1:10:13 for the Half Marathon at Musselburgh in August.
  • Mark McColl (M40): Finished 2nd Master (M40) in the Run Northumberland Castles Half Marathon on Sunday.

Yorkshire Dales Marathon Success

The Yorkshire Dales were the venue for this very hilly and difficult Marathon, but two of our runners made light work of it, both dipping below the magic 3-hour barrier:

  • Calum Butterworth: 2:53:33
  • Gerry Pelegri: 2:54:09

Scottish Masters Team Selection

Congratulations to Iain Burns and Denis Williams on their selection for the Scottish Masters team! They will compete in the British & Irish Masters XC Championships in Leeds on November 18th.
