The year has got off to a tremendous start for Shettleston Harriers, with success across track, cross country and road running over the past week.

Last weekend saw 11 Shettleston athletes selected for West District vests, highlighting the depth of talent within the club. The standout performance came from Joseph Lanahan, whose 6.99m Long Jump not only confirmed a Scottish Record, but also ranks as the second furthest jump ever achieved by an athlete of his age in the UK – an outstanding achievement.

Further good news followed with Jamie Burns, Clare Stewart bothl selected to represent Scotland at the Home Countries International, to be held on the famous Parliament Hill course in London on 7 February. Brogan Wallace has also been selected to represent Scotlan in the Armagh Road Races in an 8-strong Scotland team. Congratulations to the trio of athletes on their well-deserved selections.

Brogan will look to be building upon a successful season in 2025, where she picked up numerous medals across a variety of events. We are excited to see how she gets on at the event, which Scottish Athletes have excelled at in recent years, running over 3k in the Town Centre of Armagh.

Jamie has been a member of the club since the age of nine, with an accompanying photo showing him winning his first national medal over 1500m in Aberdeen as an U13 athlete. Now working full-time, Jamie has successfully learned how to balance elite-level athletics with the demands of a full-time job.

This selection marks Clare’s first senior international vest, following an excellent junior career. Originally from Stonehaven, Clare’s progression was temporarily slowed due to the demands of her medical career, but this season she has begun to show her full potential. A 2nd place finish at the West District Championships earned her selection alongside Jamie on the Scottish team.

All three of the athletes are coached by John Montgomery, who recently won Glasgow Coach of the Year, he can now add these international vests to an already impressive coaching CV.

Cross Country Action in Strathaven

It was back to the bread and butter of cross country on Saturday, with a strong Shettleston turnout at the LAAA / West District XC League event in Strathaven. Covering all age groups from U11 through to Senior, this league provides an excellent introduction to competitive cross country for our younger athletes.
