A team of six Shettleston ladies competed at The European Champion Clubs Cup (ECCC) Cross Country in Oropesa Del Mar, Spain, at the weekend, hosted by Club Atletismo Playas de Castellón. The Senior Shettleston Women’s team had been selected to represent Great Britain at the event following their success at The British Athletics Cross Challenge, Liverpool.
The ECCC Cross Country comprises separate events for U20 and senior men’s and women’s teams representing the long-distance Cross Country national champion of European Athletics Member Federations and a Mixed Relay event. In addition, at the end of the ECCC cross country program was scheduled a 5k open race combining the ECCC cross country circuit with 3k road.
The Senior Women fielded a team of four athletes, in the long-distance cross country, led by Hannah Terrance, Aoife Carr, Ruth Joss and Avril Mason. The 8.7 kilometre course comprised two short and three long laps of a technical course – tight turns, sand sections and 50cm log hurdles – in a sunny 20 degrees. This was not Falkirk!
Emma Baird and Elaine Mackay both competed in the 5k open race. Emma claiming a podium spot and gold medal in the Senior Women’s race.
The team were supported by accompanying race management of Elaine Mackay, John Mackay and Liz Burns. Many thanks to all of those members who made this trip possible.

Meanwhile in not quite so sunny climate the over 40s were battling out around Tollcross Park in the Scottish Masters Cross Country Championship. Jethro Lennox took silver in the M45 and along with Paul Sorrie, Chris Pantrey and Iain Burns helped the team win silver in the M40-50 age group.
Parkrun action for Feb 4th
Wins for Ross, Katie, Tom and Callum
Firstly over to Falkirk Parkrun where Gerard Pelegri finished strong in a time of 21.01.
Over to Tollcross Parkrun where it was good to see Stephen Clarke take on the hilly course finishing in 24.06 followed by local David Murphy in 24.21.
At the Alness Parkrun, Ross Gollan stormed away with the win in a time of 15.14 with his pb being 15.02 on the Alness course. He was around 3 min ahead of the second place finisher !
At the Springburn parkrun Katie Woods again demonstrated her potential with first woman, 4th overall in a time of 18.43. Katie attends club sessions and shows again how the hard work and coaching from the club pays off.
Over to the east coast where Andrew Shields finished in a time of 28.02.
At the Fort William Parkrun, Tom Owens took the win in a time of 17.28. No doubt also involving mountain running into the mix !
At Drumpellier Parkrun ,Paul Mcguigan finished in the top 10 In a time of 22.05.
At the Ury Riverside parkrun, Kevin Alston finished 8th place in a time of 21.20.
At the Queens parkrun . Susan Breckenridge finished in a time of 26.28.
Over to Govan and the fast Elder Parkrun course where a battle developed between Shettleston’s Andrew Taylor and first placed Euan Duernberger.
Andrew again had to settle for second place in a time of 17.09.
At Palacerigg Parkrun there was no win for John Duffy this time. That was taken by Jennifer Wetton of Central. John however still ran strong for 4th place in a time of 20.57.
There was a win over at the Clyde estuary in the recently established Erskine Waterfront Parkrun.
Callum Oates managed to stay ahead for first place in a time of 17.52.
