Have Your Say on The Future of Our Club

Shettleston Harriers is looking for people who want to help shape the future of our club and contribute to its continued development.

Being a Board Member is an opportunity to bring your skills, experience and ideas to the table, helping us make decisions that will benefit our athletes, coaches, volunteers and wider community.

Our Board plays an important role in setting the direction of the club, planning for the future and ensuring that we are well run, financially sustainable and following good practice. We want to continue building on our proud history while making sure Shettleston Harriers is in the best possible position for the years ahead.

You don’t need to be an expert in athletics, and you don’t have to be an existing club member. We’re interested in people who can bring different perspectives, think about the bigger picture and help us identify opportunities to improve and develop.

What does being a Board Member involve?

Board Members work together to make decisions about the future of Shettleston Harriers. This includes:

  • Helping shape our future: Contributing ideas, setting priorities and supporting the long-term development of the club.
  • Good governance: Helping ensure the club is well managed, follows best practice and has the right policies, procedures and systems in place.
  • Supporting our members: Considering the needs of athletes, coaches, volunteers, officials and parents when making decisions.
  • Planning for sustainability: Helping ensure the club manages its finances and resources responsibly and can continue to thrive.
  • Keeping people safe and included: Supporting a welcoming environment where everyone has the opportunity to participate and develop.
  • Developing our people and activities: Supporting the growth of our club, encouraging volunteers and helping us make the most of opportunities within our community.

Board Members are not expected to run every aspect of the club themselves. An important part of the role is helping set the direction, making sure the right structures are in place and supporting the people responsible for delivering our activities.

We also recognise that people bring different strengths to a Board. Some may have experience in finance, communications or business, while others may bring knowledge of community development, governance, sport or simply a fresh perspective and a willingness to contribute.

The opportunities available

We are particularly interested in hearing from people who could contribute in the following areas.

Communications and Technology

We are looking for someone with an interest or experience in communications, digital technology, marketing or social media.

This person would help guide the development of our website, social media and wider communications, lead a communications sub-committee and report to the Board on progress and future priorities.

We want to make sure we communicate effectively with our members and the wider community, make good use of technology and continue to improve how we promote the club and its activities.

Strategic Development

We are looking for someone who can bring ideas and fresh thinking to the wider development of Shettleston Harriers.

This is an opportunity to help shape the future direction of the club, contribute to important decisions and identify ways we can improve how we operate, strengthen our governance and make sure we are planning for the long term.

We welcome interest from both existing members and people outside the club who have relevant skills, experience or a different perspective to offer.

Finance and Treasurer Succession

We are also looking ahead to the future succession of our Club Treasurer and would welcome someone with financial knowledge or experience who would be interested in developing towards this role.

Working alongside the current Treasurer would provide an opportunity to learn about the club’s finances before taking on the position.

The role would involve overseeing the club’s financial management, preparing reports for the Board, supporting budgeting and financial planning, and helping us improve our financial systems and processes.

We want to ensure that the club continues to manage its finances responsibly and transparently, providing a strong foundation for future development.

Who are we looking for?

Above all, we want people who care about helping Shettleston Harriers move forward.

You might have professional experience that could benefit the club, experience of serving on a board or committee, or skills that you think could help us improve. You might be a long-standing club member, a parent, a volunteer or someone from the local community who wants to contribute.

You don’t need to know everything about how an athletics club operates. What matters is that you are willing to listen, share ideas, think strategically and work constructively with others.

Board Members are expected to attend meetings, prepare for discussions and act in the best interests of the club and its members.

Interested in getting involved?

Joining the Board is an opportunity to make a real contribution to Shettleston Harriers, helping us build on our history and create a strong future for the next generation of athletes.

If you are interested in any of these opportunities, or would simply like to find out more about what being a Board Member involves, we would love to hear from you.
