It was a packed and successful weekend for Shettleston Harriers, showcasing the full age range and depth of talent across the club: from our youngest athletes to Masters, with strong performances both indoors and outdoors.

Scottish Masters Cross Country Championships – Tollcross Park

The weekend kicked off at Tollcross Park where our Masters athletes competed in the Scottish Masters Cross Country Championships.

While the official results and record books show Peter Avent taking the title, the race itself had an unusual twist. Dermot Cummings, who was the clear leader, took a wrong turning near the finish due to a mix-up on the course. In a fine example of sportsmanship, Peter later presented his gold medal to Dermot.

In the team competition, Shettleston Harriers finished a very respectable 5th team overall.

Emirates Arena – EAP Meeting Pre-Events

Later that evening at the Emirates Arena, three of our young athletes competed in the pre-events of the EAP meeting.

  • Zoe Roberts continued her outstanding run of form with a PB of 2:13.72 over 800m, moving her to 6th on the all-time Scottish rankings for U16 Girls.
  • Lidya Woldeselassie (T35) recorded a PB of 11.57 in the Para 60m.
  • Estelle Giraud also set a PB of 8.54 in the 60m.

Superteams – Sunday

On Sunday, it was the turn of our youngest members at the Superteams indoor competition. Our young athletes put in some excellent performances with lots of PBs- a sign of the hard work they have put in under coach Ellie. Our young members’ efforts secured them an overall placing of 7th out of 33 teams, a standout result for the club.

Around the Club

It was great to see Weynay Ghebresilasie supporting our kit supplier Joma and his sponsor at the Running Show at the NEC in Birmingham over the weekend. Weynay now heads to Kenya to begin preparations for the London Marathon, where he will be joined at a high-altitude training camp by clubmates Daniel Bradford and Philip Neilson.
