Night one of the Shettleston Harriers Open Graded Events took place on Tuesday evening, August 26th, and what a night it was! With nearly 400 athletes entering the event, and a massive 199 in the 800m alone, it’s clear that there is huge interest in our sport and in the events we run!

The club is incredibly grateful for the support of Slip Stream Media, as well as our dedicated team of officials and helpers who ensure these meetings can go ahead.

Record-Breaking Performances

The field events saw some of the best young and senior throwers and jumpers from around the country, with two incredible records being set!

  • Jim Hogg set a British Record for the M70 Shot.
  • Joseph Lanahan leapt to a Scottish Best in the U/15 Long Jump with a distance of 6.52m (legal wind).

Please note: Both measurements will be checked before being officially reported.

On the track, we also believe Harrison Brand (East Kilbride) set a new Scottish U/13 record over 100m and recorded the second-fastest 200m ever run by an U/13 athlete.

Honouring Our Memorial Races

As the longest-running Open-Graded event in Scotland, with nearly 50 years under our belt, our meetings feature three important Memorial Races. Night one hosted the heats for the Derek McLean and Adrian Callan Memorial races for our best U/15 athletes.

  • In the McLean heats, Kian Dick (Giffnock) and Josh Deegan (Glenpark Harriers) both won their races.
  • In the Callan heats, Scottish Champion Lola Finnigan (North Ayrshire) and the multi-talented Dionne Maguiness (Airdrie Harriers) were victorious.

The finals for these races will take place on September 2nd and will feature athletes from 10 clubs ranging from Aberdeen to Ayrshire!

The final of the Alex Naylor Memorial 3000m was also run, with wins going to Andrew Thomas (Fife AC) and Emma McLennan (Giffnock). Andrew recently competed for GB Students in the World University Games, and Loughborough-based Emma, after winning the Scottish 1500m S/C, moved to number two on the Scottish all-time list over the distance.

Other Highlights

There were also some impressive sprints on the night:

  • Harrison Brand (East Kilbride AC) ran a blistering U/13 100m in 11.93 (W/S 1.3) and a 200m in 24.91 (W/S 0.5).
  • Molly Brown (Shettleston Harriers) impressed with a 100m time of 13.31 (W/S 1.1) and a 200m time of 27.88 (W/S 0.6).
