Yet another busy week for Shettleston Harriers, with our athletes doing us proud, far and wide!

International Action at English U20 Championships!

The international recognition continued for our athletes this weekend, with Birmingham hosting the English U20 Championships. Both Annie McLean and Lidya Woldeselassie (TS5, F35) were selected to represent Scotland at this prestigious event.

Annie McLean competed in the 400m, qualifying from her heat in 57.02 seconds. She then ran 57.38 in her semi-final, a strong performance but, unfortunately, not quite enough to make the final.

Lidya Woldeselassie was selected for both the Para Discus and Para 100m. She finished an excellent 7th in the Discus with a season best of 16.37m using the 1kg discus. There was some drama around the discus as Lidya would normally throw the 0.75kg, but was advised just before the event that the 1kg discus had to be used. Despite this challenge, she adapted brilliantly! In the 100m, Lidya ran a new personal best of 18.38 seconds.

Aquathlon Success at Loch Lomond Beastie Festival!

Shettleston Harriers athletes can compete in various types of events, and over the years, we have seen them excel in different aspects of our sport and others. On this occasion, Loch Lomond was the venue for the Beastie Aquathlon Festival, and a number of our members made the podium across different age groups:

  • F30-35: Hannah Terrance took a fantastic 1st place!
  • M35-39: Calum Oates secured 2nd place.
  • M60-64: Denis Williams earned 2nd place, and Andrew Kirkhope finished in 3rd place!

National League Final: PBs and Club Records at Grangemouth!

The last National League event of the year took place on Sunday at Grangemouth, and saw the biggest turnout of club athletes across many events. A big thank you to all the coaches and officials for their support for our athletes!

The weather was kind, with a mixture of wind speeds for the athletes in the sprints, and many PB performances throughout the day. We got off to a great start when Emma Baird was rewarded with a PB and a new club record over 400m Hurdles in the senior ladies event, in a time of 75.27 seconds!

Our sprint coaches have produced a host of talented sprinters for us and were present to see their athletes perform on the day. PB performances will be confirmed if not noted below. Andrew Taylor, who will be moving North to Buckie this week, produced a great run to win the 1500m in a PB performance of 4:02.28!

Midweek Miler’s Meeting: More Records and PBs!

Brogan Wallace continued her rich vein of form when she broke her fellow internationalist Lynn McKenna’s club record over 5000m at the GAA Miler’s Meeting at Crownpoint on Wednesday night. Her time of 16:05.79 also earned her the bonus of £300 for breaking the target time of 16:10 set by the organisers.

She was not alone at our home track, with Philip Neilson (15:03.35) and Sam Lesley (15:08.14 – PB) also in action over 5000m.

A number of club athletes also competed over 1500m: Daniel Bradford (3:58.88), Tom Porter (4:20.33), and Calum Butterworth (4:22.69 – PB).

New Scotland Selection & Team Manager Role!

Congratulations to Lynn McKenna on her selection for Scotland for the Home Nations event over 5km in Cardiff on August 30th! Adding to the club’s international presence, our very own Club Secretary, John Mackay, will be the team manager for the Scotland team of 8 athletes (4 men, 4 women) at the event. Fantastic news for Lynn and John!
