It was a successful weekend for Shettleston Harriers men last weekend in the Scottish Trail Championships in Crieff. Fred Davies battle the hot conditions and won his first individual National medal with third place in a time of 34:08. He also added a silver medal to his haul, being part of a strong men’s team that took second place in the team’s championship.  Cameron Muir was sixth overall with Iain Pender securing the silver medal finishing inside the top 20 in nineteenth (5th M40). Hamish Hickey from Central AC won the event overall and Dundee Road Runners won the men’s team prize.

Three other Shettleston athletes took the start: Denis Williams finished 73rd (6th M60) whilst Zoe Barber 61st (13th lady) and Joanne Harkins 199th (21st F40) competed in the women’s field.

The results at the weekend showed the quality, strength and depth of the seniors within the club this year. Shettleston athletes have won National medals in cross country, hill running, ultra events, road racing and now trail running. Not to mention the national indoor track and field medals won by our junior athletes at the start of the year.

That success has resulted in 12 of our athletes being selected to represent Scotland in various competitions this year. The latest call ups include Annie Maclean (400m) and Lidya Woldeselassie (T35/F35 Discuss) who will compete in the England Athletics Under 20 Championships in Birmingham over the weekend of July 25th and 26th. Brogan Wallace will also pull on a Scottish vest in the Antrim Half Marathon at the end of August.

Brogan has had a stellar season so far starting back in February with a silver medal in the Scottish cross country championships, behind winner and team-mate Lynn McKenna. She was part of the women’s team that won gold in the team’s competition. Shortly after that, as the road race season began, she won bronze in the Scottish Half Marathon Championships in Inverness, taking four minutes of her PB with a time of 75:01. Brogan was also a winner in the Babcock 10K series. She finished second overall in the Shettleston 10k in Glasgow, a result that netted her the West District 10K Championship title. Two weeks later she went one better winning the Dumbarton 10K. In each of those races she lowered her PB and that form continued into the Scottish 10K Championships at the Roon the Toon 10K in Kilmarnock. Brogan once again lowered her PB to 33:34, winning the title ahead of Lynn McKenna who won silver.

It is this form that has earned Brogan a Scotland call up but the club have also recognised her achievements by awarding her an Honorary Life Membership of Shettleston Harriers. The club’s President Elaine Mackay presented Brogan with the Membership Certificate last Thursday at Crownpoint after training. Well done Brogan and good luck in Antrim.

Whilst some of our athletes are focussed on International duties others have been competing internally over the last few weeks.  Jodie Waite has been competing down under in Australia whilst Emma Locke has been in Florida in the US. Not quite on an ‘international’ level but nonetheless competing away from home our young athlete Zoe Roberts has been racing at the Watford Open Graded meeting and produced one her her fastest times of the year over 800m 2.18.43 competing against some of the best 800m runners in Britain in her age category.

A few of our junior athletes were also in action in the sweltering condition on Saturday at the Alva Games. Rowan Lennox was second in the girl’s hill race whilst Rio Biddlecombe was third in the boy’s race. Well done indeed and you certainly earned an ice cream after that.

A reminder to all athletes if you haven’t done so already, and if not why not?, entries are filling up fast for our Open Graded meetings on August 26th and September 2nd. Some events are very close to being full so please enter now to avoid disappointment.
