Congratulations to Michael Paxton, who represented Great Britain at the European Masters Duathlon Championships in Spain last weekend. Battling extreme temperatures, Michael finished 5th overall and was the first British athlete home.

Michael is a well-known figure around the club and a previous recipient of the Jack Kean Trophy in recognition of his commitment to Shettleston Harriers. Everyone at the club sends him our congratulations.

Another of our Masters athletes, Carson Graham, is continuing his preparations for the World Masters Athletics Championships in South Korea later this summer. Carson competed at the CSSAL over the weekend in the long jump, 100m and discus as part of his preparations.

Weekend Road Racing

There was plenty of action on the roads over the weekend with strong performances from our athletes.

In the Men’s 10km, Mark McKelvie finished 3rd overall in a time of 34:28. There were also good runs from Matthew Fancourt, Duncan McCauley, Ian Gray and Robbie Porteous.

Elsewhere, Peter Avent (M40) won the Musselburgh 10km in an excellent 30:34, finishing almost two minutes clear of second place.

Closer to home, Tom Cowperthwaite also claimed victory at the All In For The Games 10km on Glasgow Green, winning in 35:13.

John Duffy travelled north to compete in the inaugural Aberdeen Half Marathon. From all accounts it was an excellent event, with organisers already indicating that a full marathon will be added next year. John enjoyed a successful trip, finishing 2nd in the M60 age group in 1:28:52.

Junior Club Championships

Saturday saw the return of the Shettleston Harriers Club Championships for our Under 12 to Under 18 athletes. This was the first time we have held an event like this for many years and a huge thank you goes to Jackie Alexander for organising the day.

We are also extremely grateful to all of our club officials, board members, coaches and parents who helped make the event such a success.

Events like these provide an important stepping stone for young athletes, giving them the opportunity to experience organised competition in a supportive club environment before progressing to larger competitions.

Well done to everyone who took part.

Community Commonwealth Games

Shettleston Harriers have continued our work in the community by taking part in the Scottish Athletics Community Commonwealth Games, held at Crownpoint on Wednesday 15th July alongside our friends at Red Star Athletics, Scottish Sports Futures, Scottish Athletics and Athletics Trust Scotland.

Our work in the community is about engaging with young people across Glasgow, particularly in the East End, introducing them to athletics and allowing them to try the sport. We are especially keen to reach young people who may face barriers to getting involved in organised sport.

The event also provided opportunities for many of our own young athletes who are developing as coaches as well as athletes. We see this as an important part of the club’s work, helping young people gain experience and confidence before going on to inspire the next generation.

The positive feedback our young coaches have been receiving has been fantastic to see and we would like to thank all of our athlete coaches who continue to give up their time to help the club, whether that is supporting community events, Run Jump Throw sessions, serving on young people’s forums or helping in many other ways.

We are passionate about providing opportunities for people of all ages, particularly young people, so if you would like to find out more about volunteering or supporting the club, please get in touch.

Schools International Success

As reported last week, we had three young athletes representing Scotland at the Schools International in Belfast against England, Wales and Ireland.

Joseph Lanahan joined the prestigious 7-metre club in the long jump, finishing third in the international competition. His 7-metre leap is a new club record and ranks amongst the longest jumps ever achieved by a Scottish Under 16 athlete.

His brother Abraham Lanahan also enjoyed an excellent competition, finishing third in the triple jump with a legal personal best of 14.49m.

Zoe Roberts continued her excellent season by running 2:12.94 to finish sixth in a high-quality 800m before helping Scotland to silver in the 4 x 300m relay with a superb 40.20-second leg.

That meant all three Shettleston athletes returned home with international medals.

Around the Tracks

At the 199th St Ronan’s Border Games, David Omorogieva finished fourth in the Youths 90m before narrowly missing out on the 200m final. It was another valuable learning experience for one of our young sprinters. Thank you to coach Gordon Bury for making the journey with David.

The club was also delighted to support Godwin Imante and Maynard Conteh at the Be Fit Today Track Academy meeting at Lee Valley in London.

Congratulations to Maynard, who broke the 11-second barrier for the first time with 10.96, before following it up with another run of 11.00.

Godwin continued his improvement over 100m, recording a personal best of 10.74, followed by 10.83. Later in the day, running on tired legs, Godwin recorded 21.91 over 200m, while Maynard ran 22.62. We believe the sprint performances were achieved with wind assistance.

Remembering Tom McNab

Everyone at Shettleston Harriers was saddened to hear of the passing of former club member Tom McNab at the age of 92.

Tom represented Shettleston Harriers during an outstanding athletics career which saw him become a Scottish champion and record holder in the triple jump before going on to enjoy an extraordinary career as a national coach, author and technical adviser on the Oscar-winning film Chariots of Fire.

Tom maintained his links with the club over many years and delivered the address at our Civic Reception celebrating the club’s centenary in September 2004.

Everyone at Shettleston Harriers sends our sincere condolences to Tom’s family and friends, and to all those across the athletics community who knew him.

Looking Around

Every weekend it is amazing how many events our members compete in and how far the club’s colours travel. This weekend was no different, with athletes competing in Musselburgh, Aberdeen, Glasgow, London, Belfast and, last weekend, Spain.

Congratulations to everyone who represented Shettleston Harriers over another busy weekend.

Send Us Your Photos

Our weekly round-ups are made even better by the photographs and reports that members send in from competitions and club events.

If you have any photos or results from an event, we’d love to feature them on the website. Please send them to development@shettlestonharriers.org.uk so we can help celebrate the achievements of our athletes across the club.
