Night Two Highlights
Memorial 800m Races Take Centre Stage
Summer returned to Crownpoint for the second night of our Open Graded meeting, which was once again supported by Slipstream Media. The evening’s highlights were the Derek McLean Memorial 800m for U15 Boys and the Adrian Callan Memorial 800m for U15 Girls.
Both races were exceptional and saw two new clubs claim the winning trophies.
In the U15 Girls’ event, Lola Finnigan of North Ayrshire AC continued her golden season by adding this prestigious trophy to her Scottish and Scottish School titles. Setting a fast pace from the start, she was rewarded with a new personal best (PB) of 2.13.20, pulling a host of other girls to PB performances as well. Dionne Maguinness, the multi-talented Airdrie athlete, ran 2.14.4 to secure second place, just holding off our own Zoe Roberts, who also ran a PB of 2.14.9. These impressive times put these young athletes in the top three of the current 2025 rankings.

Similarly, the boys’ event, which has been contested since 1989, produced a fantastic race. Gregor McNaught of Springburn Harriers was the winner on the night with a time of 2.05.10, holding off Josh Deegan of Glenpark Harriers (2.06.60). Jamie Kilpatrick of Kilmarnock H finished in third place with a time of 2.08.30. The two feature races included athletes from 10 different clubs, some travelling from as far as Aberdeen, and produced some of the fastest 800m times of the year for this age group.

A Testament to the Sport
The key feature of this year’s Open Graded events, which have been contested for close to 50 years, was the sheer number of athletes who showed an appetite to enter and compete. Almost 700 athletes from around Scotland and England travelled to this Tuesday night event in Glasgow. This truly shows the interest in our sport and the standing of our events.

Over the two nights, two new Scottish Records were set (U13 Boys 100m & 200m) and one Scottish best (Boys U15 Long Jump), along with a host of other PB performances.
These events cannot take place without the support of many people. The club is incredibly grateful to Slipstream Media, Scottish Athletics officials, Protay, Crownpoint Staff, Glasgow Life, and our many club members who make all of this possible.

Looking Ahead
Our next major event will be the 55th Allan Scally Memorial Relay on February 28, 2026. Keep watching the website for updates!
