Lanark Racecourse has a special place in the history of Cross Country Running in Scotland .The first National Cross Country Championships were held on the course on the 27th March 1886.Two teams entered, Edinburgh Harriers and Clydesdale Harriers. Sport was a bit different with only 18 runners starting and betting on the runners. Walter Gabriel of Edinburgh Harriers was pre-race favourite at 2/1 but could not live up to his pre race tag with Alexander Findlay of Clydesdale taking the title. Edinburgh had the consolation of taking the first ever team title. Roll on 147 years and 1511 athletes were on the start list with Clydesdale Harriers still around !

It was a day of mix fortunate for the club over the age groups. Fionnuala Ross was the star for the club taking bronze in the Senior Ladies 4km event. Fionnuala would admit a distance at the bottom of her range .The ladies claimed 5th place in the team event equalling their best ever performance with the help of Lynn McKenna 8th, Hannah Terrance 39th and Ladies captain Avril Mason (64th (7th W40). A fair performance with a few girls  missing who helped claim medals at the District and National Relays. It was great to see a record turnout for the ladies in this event.

With 4 of the medal winning team (Bronze)  missing this year it was always going to be very difficult to be on the podium this year in the men’s event. Philip Neilson led the team home to 12th position but special mention must be given to Ally Scott 116th (7th M40) and Bob Porteous 504th (5th M70)

Pick of the runs in the younger age groups was Katie Woods with a 13th place in the U/17 ladies event

Thank you again to Elaine Mackay who organised all the numbers as well as bringing the  club tent. Gary Woods (line judge) and John Mackay (assistant referee )  continued their training as officials at the event. An email was sent to all members about an up coming endurance officials course – Please consider this
