In a busy weekend for Shettleston Harriers a number of notable performances were record.

Chris Bennett, representing Great Britain, throw 70.12 to place 5th in the European Throwing Cup in Leiria ,Portugal. This was a good opener for Chris after shoulder surgery at the end of last season. Further down the coast in Lisbon  Weynay Ghebresilasie was finishing off his final London Marathon preparation when competing in the Lisbon ½ Marathon. His time of 64.31 puts him number 2nd in the UK in current rankings. It was an emotional trip for club secretary John Mackay who was in Lisbon to watch. John had run the Lisbon course in 1996 when representing the club in the European Clubs ½ Marathon Championships. The club finished 5th in the championships, a tremendous achievement with the first 4 clubs all being professional clubs.

Congratulations to Katie Woods who help the West District team finish 2nd in the Inter County Championships at Loughborough. Dad, Gary Woods, was one of the team mangers at the event.

In slightly colder weather back in Scotland, Fionnuala Ross was also finishing off her marathon preparations. She placed 2nd behind Natasha Phillips of Dundee in a new PB of 72.17 over the ½ marathon course. Three other Shettleston athletes also made the trip to Inverness with Fergus Donnelly (74.19) and Scott Mckelvie(78.12) also recording PB performances. Stevie Eccleson ran 1.55.22.The early ½ marathon of the day at Alloa saw Xun Zhang run 1.37.47. Ruth Joss also made the trip to Inverness and placed 2nd in the 5km race

Closer to home Jamie Burns won the University 5 mile road race with Paul Sorrie picking up the master’s prize in 4th positions. Full results are not available for this race and other club members may have run.

The final race of the weekend featured Michael Paxton who placed 2nd in the Callandar 10km in a time of 35.44
