Following a recent meeting of Shettleston’s Harriers Board we must announce that Richard Millar is stepping down from the role of Club Welfare Officer with immediate effect. Everyone at the Club expresses their heartfelt thanks to Richard whose hard work, care and commitment have played a huge part in making Shettleston Harriers the welcoming, inclusive and supportive club that it is.
Much of this work takes place behind the scenes, but its impact is felt across every part of the club. We are incredibly grateful for everything Richard has done and are pleased that he will continue to be involved with Shettleston Harriers.
Shettleston Harriers is now seeking a new Club Welfare Officer to join our Board of Directors and help ensure that our club remains a safe, welcoming and inclusive environment for everyone involved in athletics.
As one of Scotland’s leading athletics clubs and a registered charity, we are passionate about providing opportunities for people of all ages and abilities to participate, develop and enjoy our sport. From young athletes taking their first steps in athletics to national and international competitors, we aim to create an environment where everyone feels valued, supported and able to achieve their potential.
The Club Welfare Officer plays a vital role in supporting that mission.
This is one of the most important voluntary positions within the club. The Welfare Officer acts as the main point of contact for welfare and safeguarding matters, helping to ensure that children, young people and protected adults can participate in athletics in a safe, positive and enjoyable environment.
The role also carries a position on the Shettleston Harriers Board of Directors, giving the successful candidate the opportunity to help shape the future direction of the club and contribute to strategic decision-making as we continue to develop and grow.
What does the role involve?
Key responsibilities include:
Acting as the first point of contact for welfare and safeguarding concerns.
Supporting coaches, volunteers, athletes and parents on welfare matters.
Helping ensure safe recruitment processes are followed, including PVG administration.
Promoting good safeguarding practice throughout the club.
Advising the Board on welfare policies and procedures.
Maintaining appropriate records and reporting welfare matters in line with Scottish Athletics guidance.
Helping ensure coaches and volunteers complete the necessary safeguarding training and checks.
Supporting the club in maintaining a safe, welcoming and inclusive environment for all members.
Who are we looking for?
You do not need to be a safeguarding expert to apply.
We are looking for someone who is:
Approachable, friendly and a good listener.
Organised and comfortable with basic administration.
Able to maintain confidentiality and deal sensitively with welfare matters.
Willing to learn and undertake the training provided.
Passionate about helping create positive experiences for athletes, volunteers and families.
Confident enough to raise concerns and promote good practice when required.
Experience in safeguarding, education, youth work, social work, healthcare or community organisations would be beneficial, but is by no means essential.
Training and Support
The successful candidate will receive support from both Shettleston Harriers and Scottish Athletics.
Training requirements include:
Scottish Athletics Club Welfare Officer Induction Workshop.
Child Wellbeing and Protection in Sport (CWPS) training.
Child Wellbeing and Protection Officer (CWPO) training.
A PVG Scheme Record linked to Scottish Athletics will also be required, with support provided throughout the process.
Interested?
This is a fantastic opportunity to make a meaningful contribution to one of Scotland’s most successful athletics clubs and help ensure that athletics remains safe, welcoming and accessible for all.
