There was an excellent turn out for the club on the 30th April in Strathyre for the 2nd episode of this years SHR championships. 18 Shetts made the start line of the Stuc a Chroin hill race to battle the wet and clag over 22k and 1500m of climb.
Not the sexiest hill race on the calendar but a proper test of fitness and despite the marked course and plentiful supply of water and jelly babies it lived up to it’s ‘long classic’ status.
In a very strong field Dan Dry had another great race finishing top Shett in 4th place in 2.14.56, 6 mins behind race winner Andrew Douglas. Jethro Lennox, 20th 2.26.38, Joe Symonds 38th 2.37.03 & Chris Pantry 40th 2.37.42 completed the senior mens team. Unofficial results suggest the men placed 3rd team on the day. Full results here…
However the best news of the day from a Shettleston perspective were the individual and team performances from the ladies. C J Mcphail continued her excellent form to finish 5th lady (82nd overall) in 2.54.29, followed by Jessica Brydon 12th lady (116th) 3.07.38 and, in her first long race, Myrtle Breckenridge 28th lady (164th)3.26.18. This was enough to secure an outstanding 2nd place for the ladies team behind Carnethy.
The next day was the turn of the junior hill runners. Lauren, Rowan and Euan all taking part in the Lomonds fun run. I am not sure many seniors would consider running up to the top of East Lomond much fun but they all really enjoyed it. Rowan and Euan were both involved in very close sprint finishes. After the kids fun run they then cheered on the older juniors who were running in the Scottish junior championship. Hopefully we will have some Shetts run in that next year. Results here
Away from the champs there has been plenty Shett race-action midweek as the ‘Bog n Burn’ race series hits its stride. First up was Kaim hill race with Jamie (59th), Phil (51st), Alice (91st, 16th female), Luis (12th) and Donnie (21st) enjoying the Ayrshire evening sunshine.
The unstoppable Luis Eisen made the top ten at the Beinn Dubh Hill Race and Harry Pulham was victorious at last week’s Whangie Whizz with Chris Pantry not far behind in 4th.
Chris was also at the sharp end again at the Neilston Pad Race coming home in 2nd place (1st vet) to earn a handsome rosette. Just 10 seconds behind a young Giffnock runner.
In other news Walter Henderson raced the inaugural Cobbler Hill Race crossing the line in 13th to claim 1st vet 50 and 3 Shetts toed the line at this years Ben Lomond Hill Race at Rowardennan. The aforementioned Mr Eisen stormed home in 6th place ahead of Matty Low in 14th ( 3rd vet 40) and Donnie Buglass 21st.
