Falkirk was the venue for the climax of the  cross country season and it was a day of mixed fortune from the club -Full club results are below -51 club athletes finished  over the different age and it was great to see such a great turnout . Thank you to everyone who helped on the day -Coaches /Parents /Team Mangers and of course the athletes.

Highlights included a fantastic run from Zoe Roberts in the U/13 girls race when she finished 7th over all leading her team to 8th position – The highest for  a number of years .The only medal of the day was achieve by the senior ladies when they finished 3rd in the team race. Again a fantastic performance when we consider 3 of last years winning team were missing and two of our top performers this winter were  also missing – This shows we have strength in depth and a great example of the hard work Avril Mason (Ladies captain ) and others have done over the last 20 years. Hannah Terrance won the Bill Scally Memorial medal and award for finishing first Lady in the National .

Most members will know the ladies were whisked away from Falkirk straight to Glasgow Airport to compete in the European Clubs  in Portugal the next day- A big thanks to John Toms (Club member) who took them to the airport to catch a 4.20pm plane!

It was a disappointing day for the men when they finished 7th but no surprise as like the ladies they were missing 5 of last years silver medal team. Lachlan Oates  again was top finisher and took the Flockhart award and Willie Laing medal.

Other notable performers were Katie Woods (U/17 Girl) ) and Gemma Griffins (U/20 Lady)

You heard it here first, Shettleston Senior Women promoting double racing as the new double threshold of 2024. Five athletes (Hannah Terrance, Aoife Carr, Avril Mason, Elena Hegler and Victoria Riddel) straight from the podium of Scottish National XC, where the Senior Women achieved Team bronze, were joined by Eilidh Bell at Glasgow airport to fly out to Portugal to compete at European Clubs Cross Country in Albufeira on Sunday.

The Senior Women had qualified for this event from successful runs at both Liverpool Cross Challenge and Scottish National Relay XC. With barely a chance to clean off the mud from Callendar Park four Senior Women (led by Eilidh Bell, Hannah Terrance, Avril Mason and Aoife Carr) spiked up again to compete over 5 laps of a tough undulating course to finish in 19th place. In the open event Elena Hegler and Victoria Riddel finished impressively in seventh and eleventh positions, respectively. A well deserved rest day was enjoyed the following day by athletes and Team Managers Elaine Mackay, John Mackay and Liz Burns.

The club could only compete at this event with the support of Scottish Athletics, Glasgow City Area Grants ,DASH, Clyde Gateway, Joma and Personalised Embroidery Ltd

This weekend sees the club hold the Allan Scally Memorial Relay in Glasgow Green -12noon start -A massive event which involves a lot of hard work from members- If you are not running we can always use more help -Please contact John Mackay if you are free to help

Congratulations to Jamie Burns  who recorded  a PB over the weekend over 5000m 14.25.36

Winter Throws Grand Prix – Long Throws

Saturday 24 February saw the first long throws event at Crownpoint Road in several years.  The cage has recently been replaced and it is hoped that will allow our throwers to develop across all four throwing disciplines.  Long throwers have limited opportunities to compete over winter and instead tend to focus on a block of winter training which consists of building strength, speed and technique.  The Scottish Athletics organised event provided an excellent opportunity to gauge how training is going and our athletes did not disappoint.

Angus McInroy (thank you to Bobby Gavin for the photo) was our only senior athlete competing on Saturday.  Fresh from his success in shot putt at the National Indoor Championships, Angus put together a consistent set of throws in discus with a best of 47.04m.

Javelin 4 athletes competed in javelin.  Brothers Joseph (U13) and Abraham Lanahan (U15) were first up in pool 1.  The boys have had a busy, and successful, indoor season focusing on sprints and jumps.  Despite limited training recently, Joseph had a best of 25.05m and Abraham 22.93m.  Not to be outdone, our girls Louise and Lidya were next up.  This was Louise’s first competition as an U15 and throwing a new weight (and longer javelin).  She put together a strong set of throws with a best of 19.61m (pb).  If last year is anything to go by, she will continue to grow in confidence as the season progresses.  Lidya was competing in her category as an F35 athlete and had a best of 12.97m.  This was a new pb and more than 2m over her previous best.

Discus Joseph and Abraham moved on to discus and again, despite limited training recently, put together some excellent throws.  Joseph threw a pb of 19.67m and Abraham was just short of his best with a throw of 22.63m.  Now that the cage is operational, the boys will have more frequent opportunities to train and compete in this event.  Definitely more to come.  The highlight in the discus was young Lidya.  Throwing the 750g discus allows her results to be included in the para rankings, and three of her five throws were all longer than her previous best.  Her new pb is 15.70m.  Again, with opportunities to train from the cage, she will add to this over the season.

Hammer To finish off a busy day, Joseph and Abraham competed in hammer for the first time.  Joseph threw 21.83m from a basic throw and Abraham 26.25m using the same technique.  To put this in context, 23.00m is required to be included in the Scottish U15 rankings.

Overall, a successful day and much to be optimistic for the outdoor season.  Well done everyone.

Thanks are extended to the officials and volunteers, without whom our athletes don’t get to compete.
