The international feel to the club continued this weekend with athletes in Valencia (Spain) and Alanya (Turkey).
Tom Owens was showing again why he is one of the top mountain runners in the world when he won the Alanya Ultra Mountain Marathon (45km) in 4hrs 33.17
Two athletes started the World Half Marathon Championships in Valencia. Fionnuala Ross finished 82nd and a Season Best of 76.53 in a race won in a World Record Time. Congratulations to Fionnuala in her first run at a world championships event. She now turns her attention to the track. Tsegai run of bad fortune at major championships continued when he was forced to retire just after passing through the 15km mark in 47.19. He now turns his attention to the London Marathon next month.
Congratulations to John Mackay who was on International team duty as team manager at the Home Countries International closer to home in Nottingham.
The last event of the winter season took place on Sunday at the excellent Livingston course . There was a large turnout of Shettleston club athletes with 6 teams covering a variety of age groups .The only team to come away with medals was the M40 team which included one M50 runner Walter Henderson .Silver was the colour of
the medal for the team of Stephen Winter, Kenny Richmond, Walter Henderson, John Connaghan ,Peter Mackie and Jethro Lennox. The M50 team was also fancied to pick up a medal but late withdrawals on the morning of the race meant changes to the team. A solid 5th place was excellent considering the late changes for the team of John Oates,Denis Williams ,John Duffy and Brian Scally.
In the open race the team finished 5th as well. The team contained a couple of new faces at the 6 stage – Alastair Thurlbeck ,Darren Thom and very experienced runners like Mike Deason and Paul Sorrie .Solid runs by Matthew Turner and David Houston along with the other boys meant we were just short of a team medal lying 3rd until the last leg .Corstorphine AC took the title for the first time ensuring all their top runners turnout. 5th position was very popular for the club with the ladies A team also finishing in this position. The team consisting of Ruth Joss ,Charlene Mason ,Avril Mason and Kathryn Pennell .
The club also had B teams in the Men’s and Ladies events – Full times will become available later this week.
It has been a mixed season for the club on the country and road in terms of team performances . Both Men and Ladies teams have picked up medals at District and National levels with individuals like Lachlan Oates and Fionnuala Ross having great individual success. One very positive thing this winter has been the large turnout of
athletes of all abilities – Please let keep this up.
I am sure the athletes would like to thank all the people who help organise the teams – Avril Mason ,Elaine Mackay ,John Duffy and John Mackay all having major roles in this .
The track season will start soon!
