Olympian Tsegai Tewelde made a successful return to international competition smashing his PB for the 1/2 marathon when he finished 9th in the Great North Run .The race was won by Mo Farah just over 60mins. Tsegai went through 10km in 29.18 with the leading group but could not hold on to this fast pace running 63.14, just under 20 secs faster than his PB. This time will put him in the top 10 fastest times ever ran by a Scottish athlete. He is due to run the Great Scottish Run in 3 weeks and he will hope to go even faster there after his first race for many months. Also running the Great North Run was Abraham Tewelde who finished 18th in 67.02. The club will be out in force at the Great Scottish Run with Tsegai being joined by Lachlan Oates ,Ben Johnson ,Peter Avent, Tewodle Mengisteab ,Paul Sorrie and Tsegezab Woldemichael who boasts a PB of 63 minutes. Many other club runners will also competed .
Fionnuala Ross will also be competing in the Great Scottish Run and she had a perfect preparation by winning the Scottish 10km Road Championships in a PB breaking sub 34 minutes for the first (33.59) . The only Scottish athlete to run faster this year is Eilish McColgan . Fionnuala’s time will also rank her in the top 5 in the UK this year. Conditions were not great on the Stirling course with rain and wind in the athletes face so there are still room for improvement on this time.
The men pick up the 3rd team prize at the Championships with Lachlan Oates (30.42) continuing his form over a range of distances. In finishing 3rd he lead Peter Avent (11th- 32.10) and Amanuel Hagos(24th -33.00) to third team behind Cambuslang and Fife AC. Other Shettleston athletes in Stirling were Paul Sorrie (41st -33.38) and Scott Kennedy(77th -35.23)
Meanwhile at British Masters 1/2 Marathon Championships in Northhampton last weekend Gary Hester travelled from his Swedish base to finish 3rd in M55 age group.
This weekend saw the last Throws Grand Prix at Livingston with John Scott’s Throwing Group getting their last outing for the 2017 Season. Jay McCarthy, Kara Thompson and Teddy Tehoudji all recorded PB’s in the Shot Putt (Jay 10.69, Kara 10.73 & Teddy 11.29), Chris Scanlon was also competing in the shot , with Jay in the Hammer , and the Kara and Teddy competed in the discus (no official results available yet).
Round the Cumbrae 10miles Road Race saw Daniel Bradford lead at host of Shettleston athletes around this end of season
road race, taking the win from John Bell of Inverclyde .With Kevin Brydon 3rd and Mike Deason 6th the club easily won the team prize .Ruth Joss was also in the prizes finishing 2nd to Katie White of Garscube.
