For those mere mortals who like to race for the club at a weekend, spare a thought for our very own Tom Owens, who after 22 hours of running, finished a spectacular 4th place at this year’s Ultra Trail du Mont Blanc.  For those not familiar with the UTMB, this gargantuan journey traverses France, Italy and Switzerland covering some 171km and over 10km of climbing.  To put this into context, it’s the equivalent of running from Shettleston to Fort William, then climbing Ben Nevis and sticking Mount Everest on top!

A few words from Tom on his race, ‘UTMB – that was a surprise ? ….what an adventure!! Refreshing to tackle this iconic race (171km and 10,000+/-) with zero expectations and pull through strongly.  Really happy with pacing, climbing and energy.  A dawn stumble and resultant double knee bash at c100km made descending excruciating (doh!)… so delighted to make the finish. It was really special to share some miles with buddy Andy Symonds (5th!!) and to chase super strong Scotty Hawker (3rd!) ?? The on course and on-line support has been overwhelming – thank you. Massive thanks to my absolute dream support crew – brother Matt, Ross Gollan and @gregormalcolm.  Also to David Murdoch, Lucy & Amalie Murdoch and Davide Cherazfor hosting and looking out for me.’

To provide some more insight into what makes Tom tick and his planning and execution of a race like the UTMB, here’s an excellent post race interview courtesy of Bryon Powell @ iRunFar.
