The National Cross Championships returned to the excellent Falkirk course on a sunny warm day.
We had an great turn out from the senior athletes and that’s where we had the most success. The Senior Ladies were very unlucky just missing out on team gold by 3 points. Fife took Gold with 148pts, HBT Silver 151pts and Shettleston Bronze 151pts ! Avril Mason continued her recent great series of runs to finish 11th, supported by Ruth Joss 25th, Kathryn Pennell 29th , Jessica Martin 36th and Charlene Manley closed the team in 50th position for the team Bronze, well done to the ladies. Oonagh Dunnett finish 72nd and Amy MacLellan 219th in the large ladies field ever.
Again a large turn out in the men’s race with over 900 starting. With a few of our runners missing due to illness and preparation for the London marathon it was always going to be a hard shift picking up a team medal. With Lachlan Oates leading the way in 9th position the team finished 4th behind Central ,Cambuslang and Inverclyde. Lachlan picked up the club awards of the Flockhart and W. Lang medal for being the first Shettleston man across the line. Make sure you listen to the blog on the BBC with Lachlan and his Dad talking about the race. The team members for the club were – Mike Deason 26th, Matthew Turner 27th, William Bardsley 31st, Robert Simpson 35th and Lucas Cheskin 51st. 21 men finished for the club.
It was a day of nearly for the club in the younger age groups. Lewis Raeburn was just 3 seconds off a medal in 5th position in the U/20 age group, what a fantastic effort from this young man. He pick up the W.Rennie award and the Junior Trophy for his effort from the club. Jamie Burns was a little bit off form after his great run in Ireland last week and finished 22nd, Jamie’s brother Johnny had to drop out in the U/13 age group after being sick the night before the race. Joseph Reilly did compete and finished 148th in the U/13 race. Gregor Campbell was again unlucky going with the pace in the U/15 race but faded to 5th in the closing stages after being in 2nd position for most of the race.
In the U/13 girls race Jessica Grant finished 103rd, finishing her course of antibiotics’s the same day. Her training partners Erin Ellor and Elise Hollywood finished 27th (U/15) and 26th (U/17) in their races. We had three runners in the U/17 men’s race with Cameron Campbell 43rd,Theo Carter 46th and Kasey Fraser 66th .
