The highlight of night two of the Milnbank Shettleston Open Graded Meeting was the running of the Derek McLean Memorial race.
Derek was a young athlete in the U/15 age group who competed for Shettleston in the 80’s. His life was cut short by cancer and his family donated the Derek McLean Memorial Trophy to be competed for each year. The memorial race has been run since 1989 and has produced some of the fastest times each year over 800m in the U/15 age group. The top ranked U/15 boys in Scotland are invited to compete at the event. This years winner was Ben Sandilands of Fife AC who managed to hold off the top ranked 800m runner this year, Murray Fotheringham of Giffnock North. Third placed ,Jacob Luc, was also from Giffnock North. The club are grateful to Scott Kennedy of Run4it ,Glasgow, who sponsored the race.
The Milnbank event again generated great interest and the club were delighted local MP David Linden, John Mason MSP and Gerry Scott of the Milnbank Housing Association were able to attend. All of them were impressed with the number and age range of the athletes taking part, the biggest event at Crownpoint for the number of competitors since the Scottish Championships at Crownpoint in 1985
Lewis Dow of Central AC ran a fantastic race to cement his ranking of the fastest U/15 1500m boy in Scotland this year running a PB of 4.08.64 In the same race Andrew McAngus (Kilbarchan) and Jamie Burns (Shettleston) produce fast time of 4.05.39 and 4.05.65. The race was won by James Donald ( Dundee -4.02.07) who just caught Lachlan Oates ( Shettleston) in the final few strides
The fastest 400m was run by Jamie McClafferty ( 51.76) of the birthday club, Law and District ,who are celebrating their 50th Birthday.
The 5000m race saw over 30 athletes competing over the two races. Dermot Cummings, Corstorphine, taking first place in a time of 15.29.14. Last weeks winner of the lady’s race in the Alex Naylor Memorial Annabell Simpson winning the ladies race(16.41). A few U/17 athletes took the opportunity to tip their toes over 5000m with Luke McCafferty ( 15.56.45) winning the battle with Lewis Raeburn( Shettleston 16.12.53)
As previously mention the MP and the MSP made comments on the age range and they were particularly impressed with Gary Leek ( Edinburgh M/55) who ran a excellent double of 12.81/27.43 over 100m /200m .
The club is grateful to the 40 + officials who gave up their time freely to allow the meeting to go ahead and we hope all involved enjoyed the meetings. Milnbank Housing Association.Run4it and Tesco Extra Parkhead all supported the meetings and the club who like to thank them
