After some heavy morning rain we had lovely autumn sunshine for the LAAA Road Relays.  This is an event that the club encourages all of our young athletes to compete in and despite the school holidays, we had a fantastic turnout with 40 young athletes competing on the day.  As the race doesn’t have exclusive use of the park, the athletes have to negotiate other park users including people on bikes, prams and dogs which isn’t easy when you are running as fast as you can.

First up were our U11s, running in teams of 3 over the distance of 1.2k.  For some, this was their first competitive event and they all did themselves and the club proud with their efforts. The boys’ team of Daniel McFall, Jay Simpson and Mark Clifford put in a great performance and came away with the bronze medal.  Next to compete were the U13s and with several strong teams we were optimistic of some good performances over the 2k course.  We weren’t disappointed as the girls’ team of Katie Woods, Emma Leiper and Violet Campbell took silver and the boys’ team of Matthew Fox, Joseph Reilly and Adam Clifford won bronze.  This was Joseph’s first competitive medal and all of his team mates were delighted for him.

Moving on to the U15s, again we had good reason to feel optimistic as they all looked ready to take on the 2.4k course in excellent conditions.  The boys’ team of David Woods, Ruaridh Campbell and Euan Charlwood finished in 2nd place.  However, the team of the day was our U15 girls’ team of Jessica Grant, Chloe Keenan and Erin Ellor. The lead changed several times but great performances from all 3 girls brought the team victory and the gold medal.

Overall, our young athletes had a great day and please see the full results which shows some great performances for many athletes.

Thanks to Alex for getting to the park early and setting up the tent, as well as sorting out our entries on the day and getting the young athletes ready to race.  Thanks are also extended to the organisers, officials and marshals.  Clubs like ours rely on volunteers and we are grateful to those who give up their time to ensure that our athletes get to compete.  If you are able to help out in any way, please let the coaches or any member of the board know.
