This weekend saw the club recognised for their great work they do in our home city and international selection for our athletes .
On Friday night in the grand surroundings of the City Chambers a number of members attended the Sports Council of Glasgow Annual Awards for 2019. Fionnuala Ross was awarded the Outstanding Senior International Performance for winning the Scottish 10km Road Championships for the 5th time in row. Fionnuala has competed at the highest level on the international scene for her native Ireland at the World 1/2 marathon Championships and European Cross Country Championships. Hopefully she will be selected again for the European Championships due to take place in December. She has also been a key athlete in our recent success for our Senior Ladies. I know everyone in the club sends our congratulations.
Club President, Elaine Mackay, was also recognised for her contribution to sport in Glasgow for well over 40 years. Elaine is the third generation of the Scally family to play a major role in Shettleston Harriers for over 90 years. She started her involvement as an athlete of noted winning medals at Scottish Schools Championships at High jump. An international netball player and a district level hockey player as well as her talent for athletes. Scottish Senior titles at 1/2 marathon, first Scot at the Glasgow 1/2 marathon and a host of international selections. Competing for Scotland at the European Uphill Championships in Germany to add to this impressive list. Most people will know Elaine as a coach to a large group of athletes/team manager /club official and organisers of events. She has also contributed at National level being the secretary for the Scottish Track & Field commission for a number of years as well as serving on the GAA and as a trustee on the board of the East End Healthy centre before Crownpoint was taken back into Glasgow Life control. For a number of years she has been an international team manager at the London Mini Marathon. Recently she has joined the Sports Council of Glasgow as a trustee. Early next year we celebrate the 50th Anniversary of her Grandfather’s (Allan Scally) Memorial Race on the 29th February and I am sure everyone in the club will be happy to recognise the whole Scally family contribution to the club. Please check the website for details -have a run, help on the day or lets all get together for the post race celebration.
