Last weekend in Liverpool was the place to be in November for Cross country when the best endurance runners from around the UK toe the line .

A number of Shettleston athletes took the opportunity to test them self over a very muddy course. In the Senior Men’s Race Lachlan Oates was on international duty representing his country yet again. A heavy cold affected his performance and he was disappointed to finish 53rd in a high quality field .His club mate Ally Mcleod passed him in the run in to finish 48th and 2nd claim member Ben Johnson finished 116th in first race after representing England in Canada earlier this year. John Oates also competed and finished 257th in a field of over 500 runners.

Young athletes have to be tested against the best and the club supported Jamie Burns and Lewis Raeburn in the trip to Liverpool .Jamie finished 23rd first Scotland such is the depth in this race if he was 20 secs faster he would have been in the top 10! .Lewis finished 43rd only 20 secs behind Jamie .This high quality competition will only help these young athletes.

Meanwhile closer to home at Drumpillier Park was the 2017 Lanarkshire Cross Country. In the Senior Men’s Race Peter Avant took the title ahead of teammate, Robert Simpson. With David Houston finishing 7th Shettleston Harriers also lifted the Team Gold Medal. Others: Peter Mackie 12th, Duncan McCauley 41st, Mark McKenny 47th, Stephen Clarke 64th, Richard Millar 66th , Gerry Mason 68th.

In the Women’s Race first Shettleston Harriers in was Deborah Donnachie who picked up the bronze medal in the Under 20 event when she finished 15th, Emma Purdie was 24th. Meanwhile in the under 17 women race Hannah Lynch just missed out when she finished 4th.

Kasey Fraser’s bronze in the individual event lead his teammate’s of Theo Carter and Lewis Hunt to the bronze in the team event in the under 15 event. Kyle Stewart kicked off his cross country career by finishing 21st. The Girls Race saw Elsie Hollywood finish 6th with Aleix Donnachie was 17th.

With David Woods 6th, Rios Dickens 9th and Johnny Burns 17th the Under 13 Boys team picked up the 3rd spot medal, other runners – Matthew Finbow 25th, Stephen Lynch 26th. Erin Ellor was the top finishing Under 13 Girl in 7th postion , with Jesscia Grant 11th, next in was Leah McCluskey in 35th making a rare appearance over the longer distance. Chloe Keenan was 38th, Oliva Millar 40th and Danikka Stewart 41st.

Ethan Ofeogbu was 3rd in the Under 11 Championships with Joseph Reilly finishing 19th and Ruaridh Prentice in 42nd position. The Under 11 Girls Race saw Katie Woods continue her recent good form by finishing 5th , Bailey McAulay 11th, Guen Ofeogbu 27th, Eva Grant 30th, Emma Leiper 32nd, Jessica McDonald 33rd, Lucymay Smith 34th, Chloe Fox 38th, Erin Orr 39th, Katie Burns 45th, Emily Chatham 48th
